The demons portrayed in the Blue Exorcist anime and manga range from lower-ranked to higher-ranked demons and Demon Kings. Aside from Satan, the Demon Kings are the most powerful demons in existence. However, as they inhabit vessels to manifest in Assiah, they can’t fully express their powers most of the time.

Even with the limitations of their vessels, the abilities of Satan and his Demon Kings make them some of the most feared characters in the series. Among demons, very few can threaten their standing. Whether it be Mephisto’s space-time manipulation ability or Lucifer’s spears of light, the most powerful demons of the Blue Exorcist series are feared by many, and for good reason.

Updated March 13, 2025, by Oluwatokiloba Folami: Blue Exorcist has been a very entertaining ride so far for anime fans, with back-to-back seasons of epic supernatural action between demons and exorcists combined with comedy. The release of the fifth season has delivered no less. This season provides the backstory of Satan, the King of Demons, a lot of which has been introduced through the Blue Exorcist series. While some demons might appear to be cannon fodder or easy to take down, some cause havoc by their presence alone. From the Eight Demon Kings that are directly related to Satan, to the High Level Demons, they possess terrifying abilities that even the likes of Rin and Yukio have trouble with, despite being somewhat related to Satan as well.

Beelzebub

The Cute And Neutral King Of Insects

Although he has not been shown in action much, being one of the sons of Satan and the Eight Demon Kings places Beelzebub as one of the strongest demons. He flies naturally, unlike the other demon kings. He usually stays neutral when conflicts occur, and treats barbecues with high regard, holding a grudge against Egyn for ruining his barbecue contest.

It is also because of his brief confrontation with Egyn that his summoning abilities are displayed. As the King of Insects, he can summon insects and even demons to do his bidding. Despite having a cute, tiny, and seemingly weak appearance, his hidden abilities are ones that fans are looking forward to, along with his love of barbecues.

Hachirotaro Okami

The Immortal Demon Of Lake Towada

The one from the legend of the three lakes, Hachirotaro, is a high-level demon with great powers that are still effective despite him being sealed in Lake Towada. This seal was made because he is immortal, with impressive body regeneration abilities that even reflect on those he made a contract with.

He also possesses the ability to transform into a variety of things, from snakes to swords, transforming his fang into a demon sword in exchange for the life of the one he fell for, Kirigakure Tatsuko. Not only did he request her life, but also the lives of her descendants so he could see her beauty throughout his immortal existence.

Amon

The Vain Sun King With A Devastating Sacrificial Attack

Another high-level demon, the power that the Sun King, Amon, possesses is nothing short of incredible. As his title implies, his abilities are heat-related, with his physical touch so scalding it could incinerate his enemies. Being a kin of Iblis, the King of Fire, Amon also has impeccable control over fire, creating massive explosions and projectiles that can melt stone.

As dangerous as all of these are, his most dangerous ability is the power to burst his own heart and cause a supernova that levels everything within a 10 km radius. Unfortunately for him, it takes 600 seconds to activate, and he requires a new vessel to possess after using it. He also appears to be vain, claiming his emerald ring is worth more than human life.

Amaimon

The King Of Earth Cannot Access All His Abilities

Despite being one of the weaker Demon Kings, the King of Earth, Amaimon, is still much stronger than many high-class demons. In actuality, Amaimon is much stronger than he is portrayed. However, as he once destroyed the lands and made them inhospitable, Shemihaza, a high-ranking member of the True Cross Order, had to sacrifice herself to seal him, leaving only his sense of self active.

With his sealing, most of Amaimon’s abilities are sealed, and he can only access the bare minimum of his abilities. As a demon, Amaimon is often seen to be calm; however, he also has a brash and carefree side that pops up when he has his mind set on something.

Astaroth

Quick To Employ Violence

Of the eight Demon Kings, Astaroth is one of the more violent and sadistic ones. He embodies his nature as a demon and finds joy in beating and threatening people. Astaroth backs up his violent tendencies with his powerful abilities of rot.

As the King of Rot, Astaroth is capable of unleashing rotting curses and controlling demons associated with rot, such as ghouls and demonic mushrooms. Even without a human vessel, Astaroth’s abilities are potent enough to kill exorcists, even with armor on. Even with his sadistic tendencies, Astaroth is very loyal to Satan. His behavior towards Rin takes a complete turn after he finds out he has Satan’s blue flames.

Egyn

Quite Childlike, Even As A Demon King

Unlike the other Demon Kings, despite his immense powers, Egyn has many childlike characteristics. He has a small frame, likes to hide his face, and is uncomfortable around strangers. Of all the Demon Kings, Egyn looks the most similar to Iblis, and the two of them get along well.

As the Assistant Director of the Illuminati’s research lab, Egyn plays a secondary role in Blue Exorcist. As the King of Water, Egyn’s abilities are water-based. He can appear out of water puddles and form barriers out of water. As a Demon King, Egyn is powerful; however, he hasn’t been seen using his powers for offensive purposes.

Iblis

The King Of Fire Can Easily Dispatch Most Arc Knights

The King of Fire, Iblis, has made few appearances in Blue Exorcist. But even with her few appearances, she has proved herself to be exceptionally powerful. Interestingly, Iblis is the only one with a female vessel among the eight Demon Kings.

Unlike Mephisto and Azazel, Iblis is an ally of Lucifer and is against the True Cross Order. While Iblis does consider Rin Okumura to be cute, she generally dislikes Nephilim and would rather not interact with them. In terms of ability, Iblis’ powers deal mainly with fire, and she easily defeated Osceola Redarm, an Arc Knight and exorcist of the True Cross Order.

Azazel

Even In A Form Of Cryo Sleep, Azazel Is Still Highly Regarded

While little is known about Azazel, he was once known as the third strongest of the Demon Kings. However, some claim that he has returned to nature, as he takes on the form of an elderly man with hair that has obscured most of his features. Azazel is also in a crystallized form, which makes him immobile. As such, he only takes on support roles and does not directly combat anyone.

Being the King of Spirits, Azazel is known to interact with ghosts and byakko, low to high-ranked demons. He can communicate with various kinds of spirits, and while the extent of his abilities is unknown, the respect he has garnered speaks volumes.

Mephisto

Control Over Space & Time Makes Him Nearly Unbeatable

The King of Time is known by many names, such as Mephisto Pheles, Samael, and even Johann Faust V, which most humans know. As a demon and exorcist, Mephisto is quite an intriguing character in Blue Exorcist. While his true motives are unknown, he broke up with his father and siblings and now serves as the principal of the True Cross Academy, an academy for training exorcists.

With his abilities, Mephisto can keep higher-ranking demons from attacking the school, ensuring the safety of his students. Moreover, with his epithet as the King of Time, Mephisto can manipulate space-time, a truly powerful ability.

Lucifer

Aside From Satan, No Demon Is A Match For Lucifer

The commander-in-chief of the Illuminati is second only to Satan. As the strongest of the eight Demon Kings, Lucifer’s ability ranks among the strongest in the series, with few capable of challenging him.

Unlike Satan and Rin Okumura, Lucifer is not capable of using the blue flames of creation. However, he’s the King of Light and possesses enough power to destroy the planet. Unlike Satan, Lucifer is a gentle and cordial demon, even to his enemies. However, his one-track mind makes him want to do everything his way without consideration for others. While he is immensely powerful, Lucifer is always loyal to Satan.

Satan

The King Of Gehenna Reigns Over All Demons

As the King of Gehenna and the major antagonist of the Blue Exorcist anime and manga series, Satan serves as the most powerful demon in the story. He’s so powerful that his only limitation is that he lacks a strong enough vessel to contain him in Assiah.

As everything that he touches is doomed to be destroyed, Satan can only briefly possess stronger beings, such as demons, before they eventually break. Thanks to his overwhelming power, he has a God complex that makes Satan see everyone below himself. He has a disregard for every life, including his sons, whom he seeks to possess as vessels.
