Summary

- New players should spend Shard Points to activate cards during matches to benefit the team.
- In FragPunk, focusing on wiping out the enemy team is the key to winning, with kills as the primary objective.
While many more heavily marketed team-based hero shooters have failed to gain attention from players recently, FragPunk from Bad Guitar Studio has come along and found quite a few fans with its varied game modes and unique feel. The Shard Card system is a smart way of keeping rounds unique and ensuring that players need to think about their character and weapon choices.

FragPunk: 6 Best Characters For Beginners
Looking for Lancers with skills that can be learned and used easily? We got the answer!
That system itself can be confusing for new players though, and there are a host of other mechanics that players will have to learn and get used to. It’s easy to make mistakes when starting out, but this can feel bad for new players if it feels like they’re dragging down their team. For those players, or anyone thinking of jumping into the game, these are the most common beginner mistakes in FragPunk and how to avoid them.
1
Stay On The Move
But Don’t Make Too Much Noise
One thing that players should quickly notice in FragPunk is that moving doesn’t really affect accuracy. In fact, when a player is aiming-down-sights, moving doesn’t affect accuracy at all. That means that when in combat in FragPunk, it’s best to keep moving. Jump, wiggle, shimmy, and do anything to throw off an opponent’s aim, as it won’t affect accuracy if players keep the crosshair steady.
However, that doesn’t mean that players should just sprint around at full speed all the time. Running will disable firing without certain cards active for one, but it also makes noise. If one’s team hasn’t revealed its position, running near opponents will easily give players away.
2
Learn Lancer Abilities
Abilities Make A Difference, Don’t Ignore Them
There are several different Lancers to choose from, with no restrictions on switching between rounds. Each Lancer has a different set of abilities, so new players should take some time getting to know each of their starting options. New players can make use of the solo training mode (Play > Training > Solo Mode) to learn the abilities without any pressure.
Once players get to grips with each Lancer, they’ll start to recognize them as fitting roughly into standard hero-shooter archetypes: DPS, Disruptors, Tanks, and even a Healer. Bear in mind that the effects of Shard Cards can make certain Lancers more or less effective, so consider what cards you and your enemies have when making a pick.
3
Don’t Hoard Shard Points
Your Team Needs Your Help
While in a match, players earn Shard Points. This currency is meant to be spent in between rounds to activate Shard Cards for the team. To activate more powerful cards, the whole team will need to contribute their points.

New players should make sure that they’re spending their Shard Points, as there’s no advantage to keeping them unless waiting for a good card to show up. For new players who are confused about the system, one’s team will indicate which cards they want, so just go with the team if in doubt.
4
Plan Your Attacks
Resources Are Finite
Players are discouraged from attacking recklessly in FragPunk, weapons have ammo that can be tough to replenish in a round, and even abilities are usually given a limited number of uses per round as opposed to a cooldown.
That means that coordinating attacks with the team and making sure important abilities land gives players a big advantage. Sticking with the team is generally good advice for new players, but this goes one step further and requires either good communication or reading your team’s intentions.
5
Know How To Heal
Heal When Needed
Healing can be a scarce resource in FragPunk. There’s only one Lancer with healing abilities, and players have to rely on random medkit drops if Pathojen isn’t on the team. New players who are expecting to fall back on a healer will instead have to seek out the gold treasure cubes and shoot them in hopes of getting a medkit drop.
There are also some Shard Cards that can help with healing, but new players shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking healing will be readily available all the time.
6
Focus On Kills
Wiping The Enemy Team Is Always A Win
Whether player are attacking or defending in FragPunk, wiping the enemy team will always result in a win. That makes kills the primary objective, and actually playing the objective a secondary consideration. That doesn’t mean that playing the objective has no value though. If an enemy team is entrenched, then planting the bomb can draw them out – it depends on the situation in a round.

It’s another situation where team coordination is valuable. If your team is pushing the enemy, don’t go off solo to play the objective. Conversely, if your teammates are holding the objective, then don’t go off looking for kills on your own.
7
Don’t Be Reckless
No Respawn Rules
There are several different modes in FragPunk, but in the standard Shard Clash mode, players on both teams have no respawns. With one life for each teammate per round, team coordination becomes even more vital. New players will soon find that the majority of rounds end from team wipes rather than objective wins.
That means if one player is running off solo straight into the enemy team every round and getting gunned down, they’re really only weakening the team’s chances. Leaning on teammates and sticking with the team as they move will only help new players get used to different Lancers and their strengths, so don’t make the mistake of trying to be a lone gunner.
8
Know Your Shard Cards
Card Effects And Counters
While new players might initially stick with their team’s card choices, it pays to get to know the different kinds of Shard Cards and their effects in the long term. Players can unlock more Shard Cards for their account as they progress in the game and, between rounds, the cards that a team can choose from are pulled from all players’ inventories. That means the more players on a team that have a card unlocked, the greater chance of it appearing in the selection.
Cards come with explanations on how they work, so players can check them as they appear in between rounds, but getting to know what you’re looking for can help with making more informed choices. Players can also see what cards the opponent teams can select from, and certain cards counter or negate the effects of others, so getting to know how cards interact is a good idea.
