Summary

  • Joe’s story in “You” comes to an end in season 5, premiering April 24, 2025.
  • Fans speculate that Kate Lockwood might become even more evil than Joe Goldberg.
  • Viewers anticipate a twist in Kate’s character development in “You” season 5.

When You season 1 premiered in 2018, viewers were introduced to serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), a character who hides his true self by seeming like a charming, kind bookworm. Now the Netflix series is coming back for a fifth and final season on April 24th, 2025, and the You season 5 trailer shows Joe and his latest love interest Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) living in New York City.

I’m excited to see the end of Joe’s story, and although I enjoyed watching Joe’s other complex love interests Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), I was fascinated by seeing Joe and Kate interact. Since Kate is so intelligent, it seems like she wouldn’t fall for Joe’s lies, but she is just as drawn to him as the other characters. When You season 5 premieres, I’m curious if Kate could become even more evil than Joe and if her character could completely change.

This 2017 Netflix Movie Is One Of Stephen King’s Most Underrated Adaptations

Stephen King’s beloved sci-fi and horror novels have been adapted for the big and small screen countless times, and one movie is particularly great.

I agree with several fan theories about You season 5 as I think the final season will be unpredictable. But after watching the You season 5 trailer, I’m convinced that Kate Lockwood will turn on Joe Goldberg and end up even worse than he is. At the beginning of the trailer, Joe says:

“Hello, you. You’re back in the greatest city in the world thanks to the one person who could make it possible. Fame definitely took a bit of getting used to, but to live happily ever after you had to bury your old self.”

Although Kate is working hard on her family business, there’s more than a hint of tension between her and Joe when she asks him, “You want us to kill everyone who’s suspicious of us for the rest of our lives?” This quote, and the fact that You is full of twists and surprises, makes me think that Kate could have a secret life that Joe doesn’t know about. Or perhaps Joe could decide to turn his life around and Kate could decide to become a killer in You season 5.

While there are some past You characters who I agree should appear again, I also want You season 5 to dive into Kate’s character development and show a different side of her. It was exciting and shocking when Love Quinn revealed herself as a killer in You season 3, and I’d like to see a similar twist in You season 5. I think it could work even better since Kate is still such a mysterious figure.

While Joe feels trapped in his life with Love in You season 3, he thinks Kate is his ticket to an exciting new life. If Kate turns out to be the enemy, He’ll be surprised, which would create an interesting new dynamic. Although some You characters like Paco (Luca Padovan) or Jenna Ortega’s Ellie Alves seem to be completely innocent, Kate has some layers. Since she has problems with her wealthy family, she’s dissatisfied, and I could see her copying Joe. After a while, she could realize that Joe is causing her issues, too, and Kate could plot against Joe.

For a long time, fans have wondered if Joe could finally be found out. At the end of You season 4, instead of turning Joe into the police, Kate accepts him and decides to continue their relationship. That makes me wonder if she has a master plan for revenge and has been working on something for a while. Maybe she’ll share the truth about him on TV or on social media, which would be shocking.

What Happened To Joe And Kate In You Season 4?

Joe Goldberg in season 4 of You

Joe Goldberg meets Kate Lockwood when he moves to London in the fourth season of You and in the You season 4 finale, “The Death of Jonathan Moore,” Kate is aware of Joe’s killing spree. But before that point, she thinks he’s a charming and attractive newcomer to the city. As Joe becomes part of Kate’s social circle, she slowly begins to trust him, and by the fourth season finale, they’re committed to staying together. They both feel like outsiders who don’t fit in, and that draws them together.

When Kate meets Joe at the beginning of You season 4, she of course has no idea about who he really is, and that makes watching them fall in love terrifying and disturbing. Charlotte Ritchie talked about Kate in an interview with Vogue in 2023, and it’s interesting to hear her describe the tough and smart character who can’t help but be taken in by Joe and his lies. Ritchie said:

“The most obvious thing is that she’s chronically unable to express her feelings. Her armor is unbelievably strong, and there are moments when a more well-adjusted person might be upset, but for her, there’s a kind of numbness there.”

The actress added that Kate is afraid of “having her boundaries overstepped” and “You get a sense that there’s maybe something in her past that makes her wary of that.” I agree that Kate must have a compelling and possibly sad past that fans should know about, and I hope Kate gets center stage in You season 5.
