The Origins of Muzan: How the First Demon Was Created

If Not Muzan, Could Someone Else Have Become the First Demon?

Before we take a look at how things would turn out if Muzan had never become a ruthless creature, it is important to know his history first. During the Heian era, way before the events of Demon Slayer occurred, Muzan was actually a human. He was suffering from a very painful disease and was extremely weak and ill.

In an attempt to cure him, the doctors tried an experimental treatment using the Blue Spider Lily, which accidentally made him a demon. This transformation made Muzan immortal and he became extremely powerful. He could regenerate his body parts and heal himself quickly., but all of these gifts came at a cost.

Muzan can no longer expose himself to the sun, and he has to feed on human flesh and blood to keep himself alive. It is true that Muzan started the chain of demons and without him, there won’t be any Demons we know in the series today. But was there any other way demons could have been made?

An alternative possibility could have been the influence of supernatural curses and spirits like Onryo and Oni who are a very famous part of the Japanese folklore culture. Since Spider Lily was responsible for turning Muzan into a demon, it is possible that another person would have gotten their hands on this flower, which would have transformed them into a demon if their body had the same unique reaction to it.

How Muzan Created And Controlled Every Demon

Muzan wasn’t just the first demon in history, but he was also the creator of the demons of the present day and age. Every single demon we encounter throughout the series only exists because of him. Muzan creates demons using his blood. He only allows a few other demons besides him, like the upper moons to transform humans into demons.

Not only does he make them into a demon but he also owns them in a way as he is able to read the thoughts of every demon he has created. So he easily knows if any demon is planning to betray him. This keeps all of the demons under his control.

What If Muzan Never Became A Demon?

Muzan would have been leading a very different life if he never became a demon. He would likely have succumbed to his illness before he could reach adulthood. If he did somehow recover from his illness, he would have been either a businessman, or a politician, given his controlling nature and, since he was born into a wealthy family, he would have had the means to do so.

Also, if Muzan never became a demon, we wouldn’t have Demon Slayers. The whole reason the Demon Slayer Corps existed was to free the world from demons as well as Muzan. Tanjiro’s family would still be alive, and we won’t have any of the upper moons like Doma, Kokushibo and Akaza.

The Hashiras would be leading different lives as well so this series would not have unfolded the way it did. It’s highly unlikely there would be any other way that the demons would have existed without Muzan.
