R.E.P.O. is a hilarious and horrifying horror co-op game similar to Lethal Company, where you and your friends play as little robots that have to find loot to sell to the Taxman, in buildings filled with terrifying monsters at every turn.
While the intro will go over the basics of gameplay, it doesn’t compare to the actual experience of meeting a quota while trying not to die. We’ve put together some beginner tips to help you have an easier time on your first time playing this game.
How To Adjust Your Graphics Settings
The minimum spec requirements to run R.E.P.O. are low, allowing less-powerful systems to be able to run the game smoothly. Still, there are some quality-of-life graphics adjustments that can make your experience that much better.
Graphic Setting |
Recommended Change |
---|---|
Max FPS |
By default, it will be set to unlimited, but you can turn this down to as low as 60 FPS. |
Grain |
Default is on. If you want the images to be less grainy, turn this off. |
Pixelation |
Default is set to high. For smoother graphics, you can turn the pixelation down to medium or small, whichever your preference. |
Don’t Stand Inside Extraction Point When Activated
When you fill the extraction point with loot to sell to the Taxman, the process of claiming the goods will start. You’ll have a short time to get out of the way before the wall slams down and the loot gets sucked away.
If you linger too long and are still standing inside the extraction point when the wall comes slamming down, you will be destroyed.
If you’re playing with a group, you can be revived, but if you’re playing singleplayer, or you are the last player alive, this will mean game over.
As an extension of the previous tip, you will need to make sure all the loot fits all the way inside the extraction point. Smaller items won’t be much of an issue, but pay attention to the larger items, like large paintings or televisions.
If there are items sticking out past the extraction point barrier, when the container comes down to collect everything, the items will get damaged, which could cause the overall value of your loot to drop below quota, and the extraction will fail.
If this happens, it just means you’ll have to go find more items, but it also means you’ll have to brave the monsters for longer.
Master The Art Of The Crouch
In R.E.P.O. you can crouch to sneak quietly through the rooms and hide under furniture. Monsters are able to hear you, so crouching not only shuts off your flashlight, but minimizes the sounds you make.
Once you’re in crouch mode, you can literally hide under just about anything or in any corner.
Hiding while crouched is essential to your survival when being stalked by monsters, especially the bigger ones. And for the earlier levels, mastering the art of the crouch will be the only way to avoid damage, as you won’t have any weapons to fight back with yet.
Keep in mind that smaller monsters may still find you under furniture, and there are some monsters with a long reach, too, so be mindful of which monster you’re trying to hide from!
Physics And Gravity Matter
When you’re carrying loot, everything is fragile. The more damage an item takes, the less money it’s worth. If you damage it enough, you can lose the item entirely.
Walk slowly, don’t make sudden movements, and be aware of things like tables, chairs, and door frames as you move items between rooms.
Where you grab an item from matters with regard to how it’s moved. Some items may activate when picked up depending on where you grab them, and heavier items might be easier to lift when picked up from the bottom, even if multiple people are lifting them.
Your loot cart and the extraction point floor are the only places you can drop an item safely without worrying about it breaking.
Starting at the second level, you’ll have more than one extraction point to clear before you can complete the level. After you clear the initial extraction point, which is always right by your truck, you have to now locate the second extraction point to unlock and clear the next quota.
If you use the map to look for rooms you haven’t been in yet, you should be able to easily find the extraction point. While searching, listen for the low hum that extraction points emanate, as that will lead you directly to it.
In the shop, you might be able to find an item called an Extraction Finder. It looks like a long gun, and it will point you in the direction of the next extraction point. This can be especially useful when you’re on a large map with three or more extraction points.
Don’t Be Afraid To Buy Weapons
The monsters in R.E.P.O. are scary and are capable of doing a lot of damage. That is a fact. However, they are not invincible, though it may seem that way at first.
It is possible for you to deal damage to the monsters, however. Some of the little ones, like Gnomes or the Bangers, you can just pick up and throw them to destroy them. Other monsters, however, will take more cunning and skill to defeat.
In the Service Shop, you can buy grenades, mines, and other weapons to use on the monsters. If you are successful in defeating a monster, some of them will drop a core that may be worth a few thousand dollars towards your quota.
For items like grenades, make sure you use them somewhere you can easily get away. You don’t want to accidentally blow yourself up…like I did.
Upgrade Your Skills As Soon As Possible
For the first level or two, you may not need many upgrades, but as you venture into the higher levels, upgrading your skills and abilities will become essential.
At the service shop, look for the shelves holding what look like cereal boxes. These boxes hold upgrades for strength, stamina, health, and many more. Don’t sleep on these, as they could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
