A Pokemon fan has shared a project in which they carved the Pokemon Onix out of pieces of wood. The Pokemon fan has received a lot of praise for their work, and is already improving upon it with the help of the feedback they’ve received.
As a Gen 1 Pokemon, Onix is still fairly iconic and recognizable to this day. The unique creature often leaves an impression on newcomers to the games and anime due to how big it is and because it’s one of the first memorable Pokemon battles a player of the Gen 1 games would have in the first gym in Pewter City. While the Rock-type Pokemon‘s design may not be as popular as other series classics, that hasn’t stopped fans from creating tributes to it. This particular fan chose wood to do so, and while they admit they aren’t entirely satisfied with the outcome, their hesitation about it seems to have been largely brushed aside by the community at large.

On Reddit, user Ormalll shared one of their latest wood carvings, this time choosing to make the Rock Snake Onix out of wood. The fan documented the process, showing the chunk of wood they started with and how they broke it down into individual cubes to make up the segmented body of the Onix. A profile shot of the carved and assembled pieces shows the tail of the Onix rising up behind it, followed by one with the Onix’s head in place and fully carved. The final shot shows the Onix painted, with its signature gray color and beady eyes.
Pokemon Community and Artist Build Upon Feedback
In the original post, Ormalll admits that they don’t think it’s their best work, and they already have ideas on how they would redo it. One such area is that gluing the pieces together didn’t work well, and that they would consider using a wire structure if they were to do it again. While most of the comments from fans praised the work and the artist, some offered constructive criticism, which the fan then incorporated. The finished version of the Onix fanart has stronger outlines, with shading added in to give the design more visual depth. Thus far, viewers seem to be enthusiastic about the rework.
Pokemon wood carving has been one of the many ways that fans have shown their appreciation for their favorite pocket monsters. While it’s far from an easy medium, those with a steady hand and a good set of tools at their disposal can produce pieces that wow the Pokemon community.
