Gathering resources and materials for consumables is a tedious process in Monster Hunter Wilds, and if you’d rather pick up plants and critters by hand, the people of the Forbidden Lands are more than eager to help you out via the Material Retrieval feature.
Material Retrieval is the players’ main means of farming resources passively. Villagers will pitch in to help you restock your items, but before that, you’ll need to progress through the MH Wilds main quest list and do a bit of extra work on the side.

How to Unlock Material Retrieval in MH Wilds

A plethora of side quests will open up, and this includes quests from five NPCs from each major settlement in the Forbidden Lands. Complete these quests, and the NPCs will offer you their services as a material gatherer. The quests you need to do are:

How Does Material Retrieval Work in MH Wilds
In earlier Monster Hunter games, players were given a literal farm (or some other alternative) where they could grow or get their own resources. In Wilds, the people of the Forbidden Lands will be the ones doing the gathering for you. They will give you materials over time — all you have to do is tell them if you have any item preferences.
The most convenient way to interact with the Material Retrieval mechanic is to speak with Nata. From his menus, you can claim materials and set your preferred items for the next batch of collection.
The amount of materials a villager collects depends on their location and the current season. For example, Apar from Suja can collect plenty of Mandragora during Season of Plenty. If you request Mandragoras from here during Season of Inclemency, you’ll receive far less items than usual.
Seasonal yields shouldn’t be much of an issue as players can always rest at their tent to pass the time. Speaking of passing time, your Material Retrieval boxes will fill up every time you rest. If you can’t wait to get more resources, consider resting at your tent multiple times.
