The Devil May Cry franchise has had its hits and misses, but how exactly do all the games in the series rank up against each other?

Netflix dropped a new trailer for Devil May Cry, showing details about its plot. The trailer begins as a new villain describes Dante as a high-level threat, isolating him as the biggest hurdle to his goal of ushering in the “age of the Demon.” A large army looms over what appears to be Red Grave City, and Dante, voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, expresses his excitement at being the sole protector of the metropolis.

Devil May Cry Anime Trailer Revealed

After setting up the stakes for this anime’s story, Dante is shown engaging in stylish combat, inspired largely by the material the show is adapting. Dante is shown flipping between various fighting stances that take cues from the Swordmaster, Gunslinger, and Royal Guard Styles seen throughout games like Devil May Cry 5. Within the quick cuts of combat set to “Last Resort” by Papa Roach, Dante’s shown speaking to series regular Lady, apparently for the first time, and before she has the scar that she’s been shown with in most of the games.

Comic Book Resource has reported that this story is somewhat inspired by Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. It looks like it may be making up its timeline by borrowing elements from various parts of the Devil May Cry continuity. The trailer ends with a sneak peek at Vergil, Dante’s iconic twin brother, stepping into the middle of a fight. This leads to events that prompt Dante to transform, teasing his powerful Devil Trigger ability. Although much of the show seems filled with fast-paced action, Dante taking on foes in his Demon form is likely to be a highlight, and fans won’t have to wait long after the trailer when the Devil May Cry series releases on April 3.
