The original plan for Daredevil: Born Again was to create a new series without ties to the Netflix show. However, changes were made, including to the pilot episode, but an insider claims something interesting about the original pilot.
Chris Ord and Matt Corman were the original showrunners for Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again. However, they were eventually let go because their vision for the show wasn’t working. Previous reports claimed that Born Again originally lacked the action and associations to the original series. Dario Scardapane later joined the project to rewrite the pilot and final two episodes. However, one scooper claims that Ord and Corman’s original pilot episode was still there.

It’s unclear what really happened or what changes Scardapane made after taking over Daredevil: Born Again from Ord and Corman. However, movie insider and scooper @MyTimeToShineH alleged that the original first episode aired as episode 2. The scooper said, “Finished watching episode 2 of Daredevil: Born Again and WTF that IS the original pilot. So they didn’t scrap it, just turned it into episode 2.” When prompted to share more details, the insider shared: “It started with Foggy talking and then getting shot off screen, followed by a ‘One Year Later’ title card and THEN Fisk’s speech at Times Square after becoming mayor.“
Scardapane confirmed in a previous interview that Foggy’s death was already on the cards before he took over Born Again, but that it was written off-screen. Scardapane decided to include the shooting incident, so the audience would feel it. Scardapane said, “In the original version, it occurred off-screen and I was like, if something that intense and horrible and earth-shattering is gonna happen, we’ve gotta feel it and we’ve gotta see the ripple effect it’s gonna have on Karen and Matt and the world.” Although Foggy died in the premiere episode just outside Josie’s bar, the executive producers Scardapane and Sana Amanat both hinted at his possible return, probably through flashbacks. “He’s not gone forever,” Amanat said. Scardapane doubled down on Amanat’s statement, saying: “He’s not gone forever. That’s all I can say – it’s not the last thing you’re gonna see of him.”
It’s clear that Scardapane made notable changes in Daredevil: Born Again. Scardapane’s decision to bring Foggy’s death onscreen was a good move. His death was a major loss for Matt and Karen, so it was only right for the audience to see it. As for using the previous script and not scrapping it, the move is practical so long as it supports the narrative. If it didn’t affect the flow of the story and change the storytelling, it’s obviously fine. However, it’s also understandable to expect the majority of previous writing to be scrapped as the show underwent a “creative overhaul.”
The original version reportedly relied on a legal procedural format with limited action. However, it was revised to follow Netflix’s gritty and action-packed storytelling. Vincent D’Onofrio supported the change because he believed the new series needed its connection to the original show. He even considers Daredevil: Born Again as “a fourth season.”
