Honorable Mention: Parasitic Staff

While this element diverges from the typical Wand — and is, in fact, not a weapon at all — it seemed worthy of a nod in this context, with its magic projectiles and complementary nature. Spells and elemental-laced weapons aren’t limited to Wands and Grimoires, but also come with some of the more potent guns and melee weapons. Players can get their hands on one of the better swords Avowed has to offer in the first zone, known as the Last Light of Day.

The weapon is a double-whammy for foes, as its perks and enchantments allow players to restore health (when striking down an enemy) and inflict bonus Fire damage. Get this firey blade as part of the Dawntreader Side Quest.

Grimoire Of Greater Elements

Obtained In The Emerald Stair (Higher Quality) Or Dawnshore

Grimoires are usually handy options for their one-handed nature and their many instantly-accessible spells. The Grimoire of Greater Elements is stellar with its range of strong elemental spells that each aid in environment traversal and can pummel several foes with great damage.

The ability to inflict Stun, Freeze, and Burn in a single fight will give players a decided edge against even tougher baddies and bosses. Players can purchase this one fairly quickly and cheaply, for a mere 150 coins at the Might Through Magic shop in Southern Paradis within Dawnshore.

These enchantments inflict high Shock accumulation on foes nearby.

Chaining these pistol shots with spells or melee hits can overwhelm gaggles of foes and swiftly whittle down their HP. It’s a great ranged-weapon alternative to Wands, and can be secured rather early on by way of Tempestuous Luandi in Dawnshore.

Fine Wand

Can Be Obtained In Dawnshore Or The Emerald Stair

The standard Wand is a fine option for Wizards and even stealthy Rangers. Still, players will want to invest in a few resources early on, in order to upgrade the level of the more meager Common Wand to ‘Fine’ quality. There will be ample opportunities to find several common and even Fine Wands in the early and middle parts of Avowed.

This is useful, as they can be broken down for additional resources, which can then be put towards higher-quality Wands. The Fine Wand is particularly good in the first several hours of the game, as it brings sizable stat boosts compared to its Common sibling, and can be upgraded pretty quickly and easily.

Materials Needed To Upgrade

Players need to collect 22 Softwood Branches and 8 Paradisan Ladders. These can be found at various merchants early on, and in the wilderness. As a side note, this Wand can be broken down to produce Hardwood Branches, which can be put towards the next upgrade level, the Exceptional Wand.

Exceptional Wand

Can Be Obtained In Dawnshore Or The Emerald Stair

Once several resources and a few Fine Wands are obtained, it’s a good idea to work towards the even stronger Exceptional Wand. While it lacks their perks and Enchantments, this Wand’s raw damage and Stun potential are actually as good or better than two of the three Unique Wands currently offered in Avowed.

For those who enjoy hiding in the shadows and dealing with enemies from a distance, here are the best Avowed skills to use for a stealth archer build.

This Wand inflicts some serious damage on the weaker foes of Dawnshore and (some of) Emerald Stair. Players can pair this more straightforward Wand with Grimoires or spells to unleash a barrage of magic projectiles from afar. It’ll likely take a while to get the even stronger Superb Wand, though in the meantime, this weapon certainly does the trick.

Materials Needed To Upgrade

To upgrade from Fine to Exceptional quality, players need to gather 22 Hardwood Branches and 8 Hylea’s Talons. These can be found in fairly high numbers throughout the second main region, Emerald Stair.

Minoletta’s Conduit

Obtained In The Emerald Stair (Sold At Porrya & Vellino Shop)

• Charged Missile: gives +5% attack damage, +30% maximum Wand range.
  • Overcharged Missile: +10% Attack Damage, +60% maximum Wand range.
  • Detonating Missile: Power attacks deal moderate Stun to nearby enemies.
• Shocking Lash: hits deal +10% bonus Shock damage.

For those looking to score the stronger, more coveted Unique Wands in Avowed, (Whisper of Exiles and Cruel Command), several hours will need to be invested, as the Wands and materials needed for their upgrades don’t even appear until reaching Shatterscarp and Galawain’s Tusks. However, one of the three Uniques is available somewhat early, which is this Wand, crafted by the missile-firing archmage Minoletta.

After five to eight hours, players can get their hands on this potent, dynamic Wand, which boosts raw damage in addition to granting added Shock. Shock is useful and fun to unleash in battle, as it tacks on elemental damage and can Stun those in its path. This added Shock power largely makes up for its more average raw physical damage, and pairs nicely with one-handed melee weapons.
