Fable fans recently got some bad news when it was revealed that the game is being pushed back to 2026. Originally slated for a 2025 release, Fable has been long-awaited by many fans of the franchise, but the wait will unfortunately be a little bit longer than anticipated. It’s been a long time since a fresh Fable story was brought to gamers, making the delay that much more disappointing.
However, the delay doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing, and it seems as though some of Microsoft’s biggest names are viewing this bump in the road positively. During an episode of the Xbox Podcast, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan addressed the delay, saying that Fable will be “worth the wait.” Duncan further stated, “I want the community to understand that we do these things for the best of the games and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best game for the community.” A longer wait may be frustrating, but thankfully, Split Fiction‘s recent launch could give Fable fans the dose of fun fantasy they have been craving.

Split Fiction Could Be the Perfect Game to Hold Over Fable Fans
- Split Fiction is the new co-op game from Hazelight Studios.
- The story is led by dual protagonists Mio and Zoe, who are fiction writers that get sucked into a virtual reality.
- Mio writes sci-fi stories while Zoe writes fantasy.
Mio’s love of sci-fi may not exactly resonate with Fable lovers, but when it comes to Zoe’s fantasy worlds, they often feel quite reminiscent of the long-running fantasy RPG franchise. Now that Fable won’t be here until 2026, the craving for hardcore fantasy stories hits even harder. Thankfully, Split Fiction covers a healthy amount of fantasy ground despite only being half of the game.
From dragons to trolls, Split Fiction takes a truly classic approach to the fantasy genre, and it’s something that a lot of Fable fans are bound to find enjoyment in. Of course, it’s important to note that Split Fiction and Fable are incredibly different. While the former is a strictly narrative-driven co-op title, the Fable franchise embraces the RPG route. However, this doesn’t mean that Split Fiction isn’t a fun way to experience fantasy.
Split Fiction sold one million copies in its first 48 hours.
While fans will still have to wait to get a dose of Fable‘s RPG mechanics, Split Fiction‘s fantasy levels offer thrilling gameplay that is just as satisfying. Experiencing a rich fantasy world outside Fable may actually be an exciting way to enjoy the genre in a fresh light ahead of the game’s 2026 launch.
Fable Now Gets to Pad Out the 2026 Gaming Landscape
Although Fable‘s release date getting pushed back stings a lot of the fan base, it could also prove to be a good thing after it’s all said and done. Fable was facing an incredibly busy year of releases, and it may have kept the RPG from reaching its full launch potential if released close to the likes of a juggernaut like GTA 6. Split Fiction may not exactly scratch every fantasy itch one is hoping for, but it also has the potential to be a perfect appetizer before next year.
If sci-fi and co-op aren’t a player’s cup of tea, Avowed is also a brand-new fantasy option that still boasts RPG gameplay.
Now that the wait for Fable continues, longtime fans of the genre and franchise will have to look to other sources to get their fantasy fix. Thankfully, there’s always the option to return to one of the older Fable games, but it will be exciting to finally get a fresh chapter.
