Chrono Trigger, released in 1995, is widely considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time. The project was spearheaded by Square Enix’s “dream team” of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama, and spawned a successful series.
It’s now been 30 years since Chrono Trigger was released, and Square Enix is planning to mark the occasion with a series of events. In a celebration post (translated by Gematsu) on social media, Square Enix teased upcoming plans for Chrono Trigger: “To mark the 30th anniversary and to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far, we are planning a variety of projects over the next year that will go beyond the world of the game. Please look forward to the latest information.”
30 Years of Chrono Trigger
The first celebratory event is a special stream featuring the music of Chrono Trigger, which will begin at 10 PM ET on March 14. Unfortunately for the select few fans who are eagerly awaiting another Chrono game, Square Enix is very unlikely to announce anything in that vein. Instead, the celebratory events will likely focus on the legacy of Chrono Trigger and how the game shaped modern JRPGs.
Chrono Trigger hasn’t been a priority for Square Enix for a long time. The last substantial development the series received was a critically panned 2018 PC port. This version of Chrono Trigger was criticised for having significant graphical issues, bad user interface and a plethora of other problems. After its release, Deltarune developer Fred Wood famously compared the Chrono Trigger port to “someone’s first attempt at an RPG Maker game.”
Square Enix has a wide array of IPs in its backlog, but the company recently announced that it planned to focus on “quality over quantity” with its triple-A releases following poor sales for certain titles, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. To coincide with this new medium-term strategy, Square will be pursuing an “aggressive” multiplatform strategy, and will no longer rely solely on the PlayStation 5 for its big releases.
Square Enix’s only announced release window is for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD Remake, which is scheduled to release sometime in 2025. The third instalment in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project, Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12 don’t currently have release dates.
