For years, Lego has partnered with different game studios to create its games. This has ranged from Traveller’s Tales’ popular Lego games – most notably the Lego Star Wars games – to Lego’s crossovers with Fortnite.
However, it looks like this is all about to change. Speaking with the Financial Times, Lego chief executive Niels Christiansen says that the company is “building up” to having its own development capabilities, negating the need to work with other studios.
Lego Is Preparing To Make Its Own Games
Expect future Lego games to be made in-house, not with partner studios
“We can definitely say as long as we’re under the Lego brand we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical,” Christiansen says. “[Games development in-house] is something we’re building up.”
While we don’t hear any specifics concerning a timeframe, Christiansen also tells the publication that Lego has “made quite a few investments in the future”. So, we might start to see moves made to make Lego more independent in terms of its gaming output.
While many would be disappointed to see these collaborations come to an end, especially with Traveller’s Tales, it does make sense, given all the different studios involved in these games. Traveller’s Tales is owned by TT Games, which is owned by Warner Bros. Then, you have whoever owns that particular IP, which is Disney in the case of Star Wars. That’s a lot of companies for Lego to share the profits with, meaning these games must have to perform incredibly well to be worth the effort, at least by their standards.
