During an interview with InStyle, Johansson discussed her reluctance to join social media, particularly Instagram. When asked to join Instagram to coincide with the launch of The Outset (a skincare and clean-beauty company co-founded by Johansson and Kate Foster), the actress said she went as far as discussing the matter with her therapist, ultimately deciding it “goes against [her] core values.” Johansson even received an email from Universal Pictures asking if she’d consider joining Instagram concurrently with Jurassic World Rebirth‘s release. Despite the pressure, Johansson explained that she didn’t feel like she could join social media and stay true to who she is.
I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal [Pictures], and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ [I] get a lot of pressure to join social media. […] Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.
Some fans may find Johansson’s refusal to join social media to help promote Jurassic World Rebirth curious considering she’s appeared on The Outset’s Instagram feed to promote the company’s products. However, Johansson explained that her appearances on The Outset’s Instagram feed are “minimally invasive.” Johansson concluded that she would join social media if she was the type of person who enjoyed it, but she’s not, and she believes Jurassic World Rebirth will perform well without her presence on Instagram.
The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.
Instagram and other social media platforms have indeed become a part of Hollywood’s promotional strategy. Stranger Things cast member Maya Hawke recently discussed how studios are factoring in an actor’s social media presence when casting roles, hoping to take advantage of a performer’s following. Dwayne Johnson leveraged this by getting studios to pay for his social media presence in addition to his regular salary for a film. However, Johansson has a point about Jurassic World Rebirth not needing her to join social media. The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies have been box office hits, despite all but the first receiving mixed reviews (at best). The franchise is seemingly as close as studios can get to guaranteed box office success, so Johannson’s absence from social media is unlikely to hurt Jurassic World Rebirth‘s financial prospects.
Still, some fans believe the Jurassic World franchise is out of ideas and may not be inclined to give Rebirth their hard-earned money after a string of poorly reviewed entries. Johansson may not be able to convince any skeptical moviegoers, but any positive influence from a beloved star like her certainly couldn’t hurt. On the other hand, most fans would argue that dinosaurs are the true stars of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise, so perhaps Johansson is right to sit out the social media campaign.
Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 2, 2025.
