The Order: Sakamoto Days’ Ultimate Killers

For most people in the world of Sakamoto Days, the Order is seen as little more than a myth designed to keep rogue assassins in line. As a former member, however, Sakamoto can attest to its existence. The Order is essentially a group of absurdly strong hitmen that make up the very best the Japanese Association of Assassins has to offer. According to Sakamoto, one of the Order could kill ten of Shin Asakura, his handy assistant, in just six seconds.

The role of the Order is supposedly to help maintain discipline within Japan’s professionalized world of assassination under the JAA, which perhaps is the first clue as to why the Order is friendlier to Sakamoto than the average assassin.

Why Taro Sakomoto Left The Order

At the beginning of Sakamoto Days, Taro’s reasons for leaving his life of assassination are comically simple: the dude fell in love and walked out before events made him have to return. The story makes Sakamoto’s exit appear blunt and straightforward, but it’s likely this is exaggerated. We know that Sakamoto started dating Aoi while working as a hitman – presumably while he was still part of the Order – and that Aoi eventually gave him an ultimatum to quit being an assassin or they’d stop dating. Beyond that, we don’t know much other than he (literally) threw his guns and grenades away to be with Aoi before ending up married with a child and running a convenience store.

We also know that Sakamoto was part of the Order for many years and made friendships as part of the group. Many of the known missions he went on were alongside other members of the Order, and from his interactions with said members post retirement, it’s clear that Sakamoto gets along with them well. If relationships in the Order had been friendly for many years, they would likely have known and asked about Sakamoto and Aoi before he suddenly retired, so it was perhaps not as sudden as the series makes out.

Could the Order and Sakamoto Be on the Same Side?

Based on what we know, it appears there are many reasons, both business and personal, why members of the Order are friendly to Sakamoto. First of all, the business side of things. Yes, there’s a bounty on Sakamoto’s head placed from JAA, for whom the Order works. However, there are thousands of other assassins that can go after bounties.

The Order’s number one job is to make sure there is order in the world of assassination, and there’s a lot of evidence that they get paid very handsomely to do it (Sakamoto can buy himself a convenience store, after all). These are people who don’t need the money. Plus, their attention is firmly on chasing the assassin killer Slur. Secondly, on the personal side, many of the Order likely have fond memories of working alongside Sakamoto. After all, it’s an elusive group that is so seldom seen that many don’t even know it exists. If you work in secret with only a handful of people for years, you’ll likely build good friendships.

Ultimately, however, both Sakamoto and the Order’s interests are aligned. The Order wants to eliminate Slur and bring the assassination world back in-line under the JAA, while Sakamoto simply wants there to be less drama going on so he can live his konbini dreams. So long as they have aligned goals, it makes sense for all of them to continue being good friends.
