PS5 Pro Getting an Upgrade in 2026

Summary

  • The PS5 Pro’s PSSR feature will get an update in 2026.
  • This is due to Sony’s ongoing partnership with AMD, as the update will reportedly produce similar results to the tech company’s FSR 4 upscaling technology.
  • Sony is also working with AMD on possible plans for the PS6, with the team eager to integrate more AI into future game releases.

The PSSR feature of the PlayStation 5 Pro will see a major update in 2026, boosting the console’s graphical prowess even further. While Sony’s newest hardware already boasts smoother and more stable graphics than the base PS5, those who forked over the cash for a PS5 Pro can expect even crisper visuals sometime next year.

Released in November 2024, the PS5 Pro introduces several improvements over the base console, including a 45% faster GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling technology. At launch, over 50 major titles were PS5 Pro Enhanced, with over 8,500 compatible PS4 games also seeing improved performance with the help of PS5 Pro Game Boost. While fans were initially excited about Sony’s disc-less console, the PS5 Pro’s $700 price tag gave some players pause, and many remain skeptical that the upgrade is worth it. According to a new report, however, the beefy piece of gaming hardware is about to become even more formidable.

Two upcoming Xbox first-party games receive the PlayStation 5 Pro enhancement treatment, benefiting from the console’s advanced hardware capabilities.

In a new chat with Digital Foundry, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 Pro would be upgrading its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) feature in 2026. This comes as a result of Sony’s ongoing partnership with AMD, as the update will reportedly produce similar results to the tech company’s FSR 4 upscaling technology. “It’s a more advanced approach that can exceed the crispness of PSSR,” Cerny said. “I’m very proud of the work of the joint team!” Currently, the PSSR feature can transform 720p images into 4K at incredible speed, but it sounds like this new improvement will provide even clearer images for players. Sony is also working with AMD on possible plans for the PS6, with the team interested in integrating more AI into future game releases.

The PS5 Pro Will Get an Upgrade to Its PSSR Feature in 2026

In February, it was reported that the PS5 Pro was lagging behind the PS4 Pro in terms of sales during the same timeframe. While the new console sold incredibly well out of the gate in late 2024, those sales have begun to dip, likely due to the PS5 Pro’s hefty cost and a recent dip in video game hardware sales overall. Sony hasn’t been the only company impacted by recent trends, with Nintendo Switch sales dropping by 53% and Xbox Series X/S sales seeing a 50% decline during the same period.

Plenty of popular titles have recently added support for Sony’s newest gaming hardware, including Forza Horizon 5, Helldivers 2, and Monster Hunter Wilds. The PS5 Pro enhancements for Assassin’s Creed Shadows were also recently revealed, and players can expect a choice between Performance, Fidelity, and Balanced mode, each bringing unique graphical boosts when the long-awaited title finally hits shelves on March 20.
