Netflix’s The Witcher Begins Filming Fifth and Final Season in a Surprising Location That Ties Into Ciri’s Spin-Off

Netflix’s The Witcher Begins Filming Fifth and Final Season in a Surprising Location That Ties Into Ciri’s Spin-Off

Summary

  • Season 5 of The Witcher has begun filming in South Africa, straying from previous filming locations.
  • The final season will introduce new characters, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as the lead.
  • The remaining seasons will cover the last 3 books of the series, taking a different direction from the previous seasons.

Fans of Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher are eagerly awaiting the release of Season 4, but before that airs, it seems as though the fifth and final season of the series has already begun production in a location that was eyed for Ciri’s spinoff. Seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher, which will cover Andrej Sapkowski’s three remaining books – Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake – will be a very different remaining series since the beloved Henry Cavill will now be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

The fourth season of The Witcher is set to premiere sometime this year, which will see the return of Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Princess Ciri, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Bart Edwards as Emhyr van Emreis, and Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz of Roggeveen. However, some new faces are set to enter The Witcher‘s Continent, with the likes of Sharlto Copley, James Purefoy, Danny Woodburn, and the iconic Laurence Fishburne joining forces. Now, ahead of the release of the fourth season and not long after Sirens of the Deep was released in February, season 5 is officially getting the ball rolling on the show’s conclusion.

The Witcher Season 5 Has Commenced Filming in Cape Town, South Africa

Netflix's The Witcher corridor shot with Geralt of Rivia back turned to camera

As reported by The Witcher fan site, Redanian Intelligence, filming for the show’s fifth and final season has officially started in Cape Town, South Africa. Although Netflix’s The Witcher series has usually stayed around its London studios, as well as England’s Lake District, Coldharbour Wood in Chichester, Bourne Wood in Farnham, and Deepcut in Surrey, it seems as though season 5 is changing its location. This is an interesting setting as the show’s creators are using the town and sets that were built for a spin-off called The Rats: A Witcher’s Tale with Freya Allan’s Ciri.

The Witcher hasn’t had the best of luck when producing spinoffs, although the 2021 film The Nightmare of the Wolf was a success among fans, as The Rats seemingly got canceled due to Netflix reportedly not being happy with the direction it was heading. The limited series’ story was about teenage thieves whom Ciri meets at the end of season 3 and who plan a heist against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, and production on the series closed down in 2023, but it seems like the set used for The Rats might now be used for The Witcher season 5, although this hasn’t been confirmed.

For fans who weren’t happy with how the story went in The Witcher season 3 and felt it swayed away from the books too much, producer Tomek Baginski previously reassured fans that The Witcher season 4 would be more “lore accurate.” Currently, no release date for season 4 has been announced as yet. In the meantime, fans can rewatch all seasons of The Witcher on Netflix to catch up before the next season arrives.
