On paper, Mortal Kombat and Fallout are incredibly different franchises. While one is a 2D fighting game series that follows a now-multiversal plot about a tournament that’s fought to the death, the other is a narrative-driven RPG series set in a post-apocalyptic retro-future. The only things the two franchises share are a penchant for violence and gore, and moments of tongue-in-cheek humor.
But oddly enough, Mortal Kombat and Fallout may have just stumbled into the same boat. Both beloved gaming franchises are set to take a bit of a break, but rather than leave their fans wanting, both have something non-game-related on the horizon.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has found itself once again in the middle of a long-standing series cycle, where the latest entry is criticized by fans and its predecessor is suddenly regarded as the better entry, despite it being the derided new release just a few years prior. Though its initial critical reception was generally positive, Mortal Kombat 1‘s post-launch hasn’t gone quite as well, with some microtransaction controversies, lackluster seasonal content, and a disappointing story expansion all holding the latest entry back.
Back in December 2024, it was rumored that Mortal Kombat 1‘s planned third wave of DLC had been canceled. Though no official comments from Warner Bros. or NetherRealm have been made regarding this alleged third Kombat Pack, it seems likely that Mortal Kombat 1‘s post-launch support is coming to an end, with the upcoming T-1000 fighter likely being the game’s last, at least for the foreseeable future.
A few weeks ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran reportedly sat down to talk with NetherRealm, possibly about some top-secret video game projects for the new DCU. If the recent rumors are true and NetherRealm is working on another DC game, then it’s unlikely fans will see another Mortal Kombat entry for quite some time.
This would put the Mortal Kombat franchise in the same boat as Fallout, which hasn’t had a new mainline entry for a decade. And fans still have a long wait ahead of them, with Fallout 5 not slated to appear on store shelves until 2030 at the very earliest.
Mortal Kombat and Fallout Fans Still Have Something to Look Forward To
But while new Mortal Kombat and Fallout games might be years away, fans of both franchises won’t be going completely empty-handed. Both franchises are set to receive live-action adaptations within the next year or so.
Currently set for an October 24, 2025 theatrical debut, Mortal Kombat 2 will be a sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat. Though the 2021 live-action adaptation was far from perfect, it had some strong action sequences and a whole lot of promise, promise that its sequel could finally deliver on. Mortal Kombat 2‘s plot is still being kept under wraps, but it’s been confirmed that Karl Urban will join the cast as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.
Amazon’s critically-acclaimed live-action Fallout show is also getting a reprieve, with season 2 currently filming. No release date has been set for Fallout Season 2 just yet, but it’s reportedly targeting a mid-2026 premiere. Fallout Season 2 is tackling New Vegas, one of the most beloved settings in the franchise, so there’s arguably even more pressure for the showrunners to knock it out of the park this time.
