  • Somali pled guilty to Obstruction of Business, with charges leading to a potential 10 year sentence.
  • South Korea’s strict stance sets an example that disruptive behavior will face harsh punishment.

Twitch streamer Asmongold has praised the South Korean government’s reaction to Johnny Somali’s antics in the country. In 2023, Somali, real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael, began streaming on Twitch and, after getting banned, moved to YouTube, Kick, and eventually Rumble. The content creator gained attention for his disruptive streams in other countries, where he taunted residents, played excessively loud music, disregarded social and cultural norms, and made intentionally provocative comments about sensitive topics like the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

This behavior led to Somali being arrested in multiple countries and becoming generally disliked by many in the livestreaming community. His arrests never led to real punishment, however, and it seemed as if there would never be incentive for him to stop his offensive comportment. That changed in October 2024 in South Korea, when Johnny Somali was arrested for obstruction of work/business, violation of the Minor Crimes Act, and other charges.

Johnny Somali Is Facing 10 Years in Prison

Infamous streamer Johnny Somali is arrested in South Korea and could spend up to ten years in jail in the country.

After showing up — one hour late, hungover, and wearing a MAGA hat — to court on March 7, Somali ultimately pled guilty to a charge of Obstruction of Business and two counts of violating the Minor Crimes Act. It was just the first day of trial, and his next court date has been postponed to April 9. Along with many others, Asmongold has praised South Korea for its unbending stance towards Somali’s transgressions. “I think it’s a very good thing that they’re punishing him a lot,” said the streamer.

Johnny Somali Is Facing a Long Sentence in South Korea

Somali is actually facing four total charges, the last one being another obstruction of business accusation, and it’s not yet known how he will plead on that. An obstruction of business charge carries a maximum of five years in jail, and since the content creator has two counts against him, that could mean a sentence of 10 years plus whatever he gets for violating the Minor Crimes Act.

While Asmongold agreed that possibly going to prison for 10 years for his behavior seems a bit extreme, the Twitch streamer stated, “I don’t have a lot of sympathy either.” South Korea is setting an example that people cannot and should not come to the country “acting a fool.” A harsh punishment is better than simply getting deported, says Asmongold, because the latter will not deter Somali or other potential troublemakers.

Somali isn’t the only content creator who has gone to other countries and made a bad name for themselves. Ice Poseidon returned to streaming in 2022, after being banned from Twitch for the actions of the toxic community he had nurtured. Within little more than a year, Poseidon was in Japan and accused of stealing food, littering, and engaging in other questionable behavior.
