The Zombie Dragon is a boss in Suikoden that players will encounter as they explore Toran Lake Castle, and it packs quite a punch. Indeed, this boss can be very difficult to defeat, with its high-damage, area-of-effect attack proving to be particularly nasty. Fortunately, a bit of preparation can make it much easier to bring down the Zombie Dragon in Suikoden, and this guide is here to elaborate upon that statement and help players beat the boss.

How to Beat Zombie Dragon in Suikoden 1
Preparation
If a player is struggling to defeat the Zombie Dragon, they should take some time to prepare more thoroughly. Specifically, players should backtrack to the beginning of Suikoden‘s Toran Lake Castle, use Yam Koo to return to Kaku, and pursue the following endeavors:
Equip Cleo with the Fire Rune
The very first thing that players should do is equip Cleo with the Fire Rune that they received from Leknaat. Players can perform that action by visiting Seika, the town just northeast of Kaku, and speaking with the woman inside the building with the orb sign.
While visiting Seika, players may want to stop by the Item Shop and purchase a Water Orb, which could then be equipped to Gremio to give him access to healing spells. That said, this is not strictly necessary, provided that the player brings a sufficient amount of Medicine to this Suikoden boss battle.
Level Up
It is critical that the party members in Suikoden be at suitable levels before fighting the Zombie Dragon, and it is recommended that players get them all to Level 20. Fortunately, that can be done very quickly by taking these actions:
- Head east from Kaku, and follow the treeline south to reach the Great Forest town.
- Stop by the Inn, rest, and make save.
- Exit the town to the right to reach a screen with a dirt path.
- Run around on this screen to repeatedly trigger random encounters.
- If the encounter features multiple Kobolds or Holly Elves, use Cleo’s Rune to kill them all quickly with Firestorm. If the encounter features only one Holly Elf, or only includes Holly Boys, standard attacks should be sufficient.
- When Cleo runs out of Firestorm charges, rest at the Inn on the screen to the left to recharge them.
- Repeat Steps 3–6 until the party members hit Level 20.
Stock Up on Medicine
Players should make sure that they have plenty of Medicine, which can be purchased at the Item Shop in Kaku, before fighting the Zombie Dragon. It is also recommended that every party member has some of that Medicine in their inventory.
Upgrade Equipment
Players may want to stop by the Weapon Shop in Kaku and get all their party members’ weapons to Level 5. Additionally, JRPG fans should consider purchasing any upgrades that can be found in the Armor Shop in Kaku.
Battle
Players should now be well-prepared for the fight with the Zombie Dragon, and they should return to Toran Lake Castle, via Yam Koo in Kaku, and engage the boss in battle. While this fight in Suikoden should now be quite straightforward, here is how players should approach it:
- Prioritize keeping Cleo alive, and use a spell from her Fire Rune on the Zombie Dragon every turn.
- Allow the other party members to attack the dragon when they are all above 100 HP.
- If any party member drops below 100 HP, have someone (who is not Cleo) take a turn off from attacking to use Medicine on them.
