Godzilla and Kong are set to return for another crossover movie after the successful Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The anticipated sequel is still two years away, but the rumored plot leaked and gave away too much.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released on March 29, 2024. It was a commercial success but received a mixed reception from critics in the United States, with some viewers loving it for satisfying the entertainment they craved from the MosterVerse. However, the critics seemed unsatisfied with the storytelling depth and innovation. This is evident in its score from Rotten Tomatoes. The movie received 54% from the critics out of the 294 reviews and 90% from the audience out of the over 5,000 reviews. The sequel appears promising based on the leaked plot.

Godzilla is returning to theaters to make another milestone and offers never-before-seen footage as a special treat to fans.

MonsterVerse fans love to speculate and discuss their ideas in the upcoming movies. Just recently, a report listed some significant plots in the Godzilla x Kong sequel. Surprisingly, it included a “major twist.” According to High on Cinema, Godzilla could become the antagonist. “The major twist this time is that Godzilla himself is set to become the primary antagonist. His rage is fueled by humanity’s interference in the natural order, leading to a full-scale war between Titans and the military,” the report read. This is surprising since in the first movie, Godzilla played a protective role and partnered with Kong to safeguard humanity from the threat of the Skull Island titans. Both Godzilla and Kong are protagonists in the previous movie, so changing the narrative and making the former the antagonist this time is a huge twist.

In addition to Godzilla allegedly having a change of heart in Godzilla x Kong 2, the anticipated movie will reportedly feature the return of the Titan Shimo. However, it will reportedly be defeated by advanced weaponry designed to beat the Titans, including Godzilla and Kong. On the other hand, Kong will reportedly find himself “conflicted.” As Godzilla turns against humanity and “leans toward war,” Kong can relate to his wrath but is torn between protecting the humans or rejecting them. One scene will reportedly feature a massive battle between Kong and the military, which will be “one of the film’s standout moments.” The military also reportedly attacks Godzilla in the Roman Colosseum, which leads to an “explosive battle.”

Godzilla was introduced as a villain and an anti-hero, so making him the bad guy in the sequel would not be a total surprise. However, the reaction will surely be divisive because some love seeing Godzilla as a hero. The giant reptilian kaiju has been taking a more heroic role in the previous movie and turning him into a villain in the Godzilla x Kong sequel will feel like a betrayal for those who have been rooting for him. However, some might love the return of a villainous Godzilla. For instance, many loved how he was written in Godzilla Minus One, where the Titan was portrayed as a force of nature. Regardless, if done right, this could be a promising plot twist. Godzilla can be an antagonist but not a pure evil. Also, Godzilla can have a change of heart and still work in tandem with Kong in the latter part of the film, so it’s just down to how it will be written and executed.

Godzilla x Kong 2 will be released on March 26, 2027.
