Five Years After Launch, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Is Outperforming God Of War And No Man's Sky On PS5

Summary

  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 has reportedly seen a 94.3 percent boost in players on PS5.
  • This boost in popularity, spurred on by the THPS 3 + 4 announcement, supposedly puts it above games like God of War and No Man’s Sky.
  • However, multiplayer servers have been broken for a few years now.

Activision finally unveiled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 last week, and fans are so eager to get stuck back in that they’re returning in droves to THPS 1 + 2.

As reported by True Trophies, Vicarious Visions’ original duo of remakes has seen a 94.3 percent boost in players on PS5. This reportedly puts it above flagship exclusives like God of War, as well as evergreen icons such as No Man’s Sky, Among Us, and Sea of Thieves.

This data is based on a sample of 3.4 million active PSN accounts.

It’s no doubt helped by the fact that you can play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 on PS Plus Extra, so not only are we seeing fans return to the series, reinvigorated by news of another collection of remakes, but perhaps even newcomers who are interested in what all the hubbub is about. Unfortunately, however, the pair are not available on Xbox Game Pass, even though THPS 3 + 4 will be at launch.

Server Issues Are Still Plaguing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

There is a catch, however, if you decide to revisit the original remakes. Back in 2023, our Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley reported that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 multiplayer had been “unplayable” for a year. Jump ahead two years and, unfortunately, not much has changed.

It’s hardly surprising given that developer Vicarious Visions was folded into Blizzard a few years back, and is now functioning as a Call of Duty and Diablo 4 support studio, but with multiplayer functionality being broken for so long, many mistakenly believe that the servers were taken down.

They’re still up, but using them is a nightmare. Stacey found that disconnecting from the internet on your console, connecting to your phone’s hotspot instead, finding a server in THPS 1 + 2, and then reconnecting to the internet, seemed to fix the problem. Hardly an intuitive workaround, but if you want to play online with your mates, it’s worth a shot.

If you want to get the Platinum without all the rigmarole of getting the online to work, however, just plug in a second controller. Local multiplayer is a lot less of a hassle.
