Witcher 4 Devs Explain How They’ve Addressed One Of The Biggest Complaints About The Previous Game

The Witcher 4 Trailer May Have Revealed A New Voice For Ciri

Summary

  • Ciri’s combat style in The Witcher 4 will be different from Geralt’s, say the devs.
  • CDPR is evolving Ciri’s combat style to reflect her unique body type and nimbleness.
  • Geralt would be proud.

The Witcher 3 is considered one of the best action RPGs ever made. This is primarily down to brilliant writing, great character development, and the gorgeous open world created by CD Projekt Red. However, even games as good as this one have weak points, and even fans would agree that the combat could have been better.

The Witcher 4 Already Sounds Too Big

CDPR could learn a lot from the incredibly underrated Witcher 2.

Geralt is a master swordsman who can use his Witcher magic to level the playing field. And, while the combat animation was on point, it tended to feel a bit weightless, even while fighting huge monsters like the fiend. It seems CDPR is not just changing the protagonist for The Witcher 4, but will also give Ciri her own combat style.

How Will Ciri’s Combat Style Differ From Geralt’s In The Witcher 4?

We already know that The Witcher 4 will feature a story event that will knock Ciri down from the all-powerful being she was at the end of The Witcher 3. She will follow in her father figure’s footsteps and become a wandering Witcher, fighting monsters and men alike. The announcement trailer showed her pulling off some agile moves that were very different from Geralt’s approach, and that will make it into the gameplay as well.

In a conversation on CDPR’s AnsweRED Podcast, senior communications manager Pawel Burza talked about Ciri’s unique fighting style and how it will be different from Geralt’s (thanks, GamesRadar+). He particularly pointed out one instance where she performs a flip to kill the monster, saying, “You don’t see Geralt doing these things. He’s nimble, but he feels like a block, in some sense. She’s like, liquid, compared to him.”

“You also need to think about it – her body type is much different than what you expect from Geralt,” he explained. “He’s more blocky, she’s more nimble, and she’s smaller, which lets her use that to her advantage, because she’s more agile.”

Game director Sebastian Kalemba added that she “moves like she was raised by wolves in Kaer Morhen,” which “comes from her personality, her posture and stuff.”

It’s evident that Ciri’s combat style will be vastly different from that of the White Wolf. We saw a bit of that in The Witcher 3, and it will be interesting to see how the devs have evolved it for the next entry in the series.
