In Sakamoto Days, no powerful assassin can scare Taro Sakamoto, but one thing the legendary hitman fears the most is not death but a devastating breakup with his beautiful and compassionate wife, Aoi. As tensions rise in Sakamoto Days, the legendary hitman sets out on a mission to protect not just his beloved family from deadly foes but also his marriage with Aoi to the best of his abilities.
Taro Sakamoto’s exit from The Order left a bitter taste in the mouths of most assassins, particularly his former acquaintances, such as Boiled from the Amusement Park Arc, who couldn’t seem to let go of his former grandeur. Regardless, Sakamoto’s new life with Aoi and their daughter Hana is the most important thing in the world, and no gun, not even a huge bounty, could ever convince him to abandon them. And, true to his commitment to his wife, Sakamoto makes every effort to keep his married life intact despite his past aggressively coming back into their lives.

Sakamoto’s Struggles to Balance Married Life With His Past
How Can Sakamoto Balance Both Worlds?
Being a former assassin with a huge bounty on his head is extremely challenging, even for someone as powerful as Sakamoto, who could instantly kill his enemies at will, regardless of his body shape. But while Sakamoto boasts overwhelming strength and has the most impressive skills, he is at a significant disadvantage because he must confront different kinds of threats from rival assassins, powerful organizations, and former adversaries who want him dead, all while keeping his family safe. Worse, Sakamoto needs to restrain himself, even if it means fighting with everyday objects such as a pen, a marble, and even a rubber band, to make sure that no one dies in the end.
“If you won’t change… then I can’t be with you.” —Aoi Sakamoto
For Sakamoto’s wife, Aoi, the death of another person, whether innocent or not, at the hands of her husband was a major deal-breaker in their marriage. She often reminds Sakamoto about this stringent rule in their relationship, so much that it makes Sakamoto sweat just by thinking about it. And if Aoi discovers that Sakamoto has bloodied his hands again, she will most likely take her belongings, including their daughter, and leave Sakamoto, or possibly kick Sakamoto out of the house and file for divorce. This would be the worst-case situation for Sakamoto, who simply wants to live with his wife and daughter peacefully, free from assassins holding a pistol to his head.
Will Sakamoto Break His Promise to His Wife?
Is Sakamoto’s Marriage on the Brink of Collapse?
Sakamoto is an incredibly patient man, so much so that even if he had a secret stash of deadly weapons in his convenience store, he would choose the least lethal to use against his opponents. Even still, there’s no saying when his patience will run out, especially in the face of a powerful enemy who may force him to take the gun and fire a bullet in their chest despite the promise he has with his wife. If the situation arises and the lives of his loved ones are at stake, Sakamoto could revert to his old ways due to a lack of options.
“The penalty for breaking the family rules is divorce!”—Aoi Sakamoto
But for now, Sakamoto and Aoi are still together, and there are no signs that they will break up anytime soon. From their dramatic moment off the balcony, when Aoi had to enlighten Sakamoto in Sakamoto Days episode 2 “Vs. Son Hee and Bacho,” prior to getting married, Sakamoto has stayed true to his promise to his wife by refusing to lie and kill. This only shows Sakamoto’s willingness to make an extraordinary effort and to go to tremendous lengths to keep Aoi in his life.
Taro Sakamoto proves that a former assassin may start over and live a peaceful life without violence in the pursuit of love and marriage. Some of his colleagues may think his married life is a joke, but Sakamoto wants nothing more than to keep his family together. Only Yuto Suzuki, author of Sakamoto Days, will know if Sakamoto can uphold his principles and keep his promise to his wife.
