Rattler

Just A Little Guy Doing His Best

A common little critter you’ll often run into, the Rattler seems terrifying at first because it’s fast and tiny, but it’s not something to worry about. Unless you’re standing at the top of some stairs, then you’re going for a screen shaking tumble.

The Rattlers main problem is that this pest can knock you down and ragdoll you for an annoyingly long time. It only deals one damage, and it’s not a high reward photo, but it’s an adorable little alien that adds some life to what often can feel like empty interiors. Plus it’s a rat and rats are cute.

You can deal with a Rattler by just closing a door on it, or jumping. Its hitbox is tiny so it can barely touch you in the first place.

String Trap

Looks Like What You Think, But It isn’t

Those of you that grew up on Half Life will recognise this copyright distinct alien as not the Barnacle, but a String Trap. Just like its inspiration it hangs out on ceilings and drapes a long tongue all the way to the floor.

Anything, and we mean anything, that walks into it will be grabbed and dragged towards its toothy maw. So you’ll often find monsters, or hidden survivors hanging from it half the time. If you get caught by one then you better get some help fast from other Journalists, or have something to chuck at it.

Try to keep an eye on the ceiling, String Taps are only a massive hazard to the unobservant.

Squeeble

A Walking Jump Scare Waiting To Happen

The Headliners: An alien infant sized creature fleeing from the camera.

Resembling a burnt infant monster from Silent Hill, the Squeeble is a harmless alien that can scare the absolute bejeezus out of you but it won’t cause any problems. It looks like a little naked alien baby, and it makes a fair amount of noise when its spooked.

It’s really good for harvesting alien photo points as you can just sneak right up to it and grab a great photograph with no problem. A good tip is to use selfie mode as this gains more points for your picture. So if you hear or see a Squeeble, just relax as you’re about to get some free and easy points.

Infected Bug

The Cause Of Many Problems

Unlike the last critter, the Infected Bug is something that’s worth keeping your guard up for at all times. It looks like a harmless little Horseshoe Crab thrown through an alien filter, but it’s incredibly dangerous.

The main threat from the Infected Bug is that it can kill you in one hit. It manages this by jumping toward you at head height. If it lands on you another player has roughly three seconds to hit “E” or the “use” button on you or you’re dead. And the issues don’t end there. After someone is infected by the bug, it takes control of their entire body and will start chasing you around.

The bug can infect Survivors, Military and other players. Infected Players that are dead can also watch their body be walked around like a puppet by the bug in their Death Cam.

Pulpo

Watch Out For Those Tentacles

A mix of an octopus and the Master Hands from Zelda, the Pulpo is a high threat creature that you can mess with if you’re brave. It’s a fairly common creature with some rarer variants, and it attacks by flinging out a tentacle that will spear or throw around a target. Usually a Survivor or Journalist.

However, you can deal with it fairly easily by running up to it and tipping it over by pressing the “E” or “Use” button on them. The same applies if you’re grabbed. They net a decent amount of points for a photograph, and you can easily bypass it just by closing a door. It’s spooky, sounds horrible, and its attack is deadly and causes a lot of hilarity if you’re playing with a group.

Shamble

It Looks Friendly, But It Really Isn’t

The Shamble are a fun monster to encounter as there’s two variants of them that are both adorable and terrifying at the same time. Plus, their distinct designs imply a bit of diegetic background lore that the creature grows and mutates over time.

For example, the most common version is a cute small juvenile looking version, whilst the other is larger, more developed and covered in tentacles implying that it’s an adult. It’s a fun detail for a high damaging creature that enjoys literally ripping you limb from limb. If you see one, grab a photo then run as fast as you can.

The Shamble variants can hide and travel through vents. So just be aware of those little grates as you wander around, one of them can pop out in seconds for a quick swipe.

Tormentor

An Alien With An Anger Problem

A terrifying creature to run into that’s also incredibly funny to watch attack someone else, the Tormentor is a high value target for photographs and a massive threat to deal with. There’s a few variants of it and they all look intimidating, but it’s their attack that’s the biggest problem.

They like to sprint toward you, or another player in co-op, grab them by a limb, usually a leg, and then slam them around like the Hulk did to Loki in the first Avengers movie. It’s a brutal and highly damaging attack that usually results in a lost limb or two for those that are attacked.

You can subdue a Tormentor with a Bear Trap, Landmine, throwing a limb at it, or by having it run into a String Trap.

Stalker

The Stalker is a creature in The Headliners that looks a lot scarier than it is, although that only applies as long as it doesn’t actually hit you. This little scaredy cat will hide in the darkness at the back of areas, and will often dart around in the shadows causing you to glance around a lot.

But when you approach them they’ll run away the majority of the time. What they really like to do is to sneak up on you from behind, then rip a limb off. They take a limb everytime, but as long as you turn and face them at the last moment they’ll usually run.

Switching to Selfie Mode when you think a Stalker is near is a good way to keep an eye out for them and for nabbing a high scoring photograph.

Tornado

A Twister From Hell, Just For You

Arguably one of the most deadly and fairly rare monsters you’ll run into, the Tornado is a Kaiju class event that excels at team wipes. It’s a massive tornado with big glowing red eyes, and it enjoys sucking up physics props like cars, trees, and corpses to liberally toss everywhere.

On narrow maps it’s really hard to avoid, tracks toward the player at all times, and has a wide area of effect that will suck you right off the ground and instantly kill you. Unless it spawns way off in the background, if it’s anywhere near the extraction zone it’s usually a run ender. There’s no way to deal with it other than running away, but you’ll hear an air raid siren before it spawns.

Velociralien

Godzilla 1998 Would Like A Word

We’re closing things off on a high note with arguably the best, coolest, and most fun to deal with monster in The Headliners, the Velociralien. This massive Kaiju is a mix between Godzilla and a T-Rex from Jurassic Park and it perfectly captures the overall vibe that the game is going for.

It’s only deadly if you get close, but when it appears it makes you instantly feel like you’re in a Kaiju or massive monster movie and it really works well. You’ll always get some high ranking photos when it pops up as it causes a ton of carnage, and it just really suits the aesthetics in certain levels, like ChinaTown as an example. It’s also easy to hear spawning as it roars and stomps around a lot, so you can avoid it without too much of a problem.
