Dexter: Resurrection marks Michael C. Hall’s second return as the eponymous serial killer. 8 years after the original Dexter series finale disappointed most fans, the Dexter: New Blood miniseries took a second stab at wrapping up Dexter Morgan’s story by having the character meet his demise at the hands of his teenage son Harrison. However, Dexter: Resurrection is retconning the New Blood ending by having Dexter Morgan survive his wounds and seemingly find himself in New York City. With production on Dexter: Resurrection currently underway, a cast of familiar and new faces has assembled in New York City, and the latest addition is someone Modern Family fans will recognize.

The Dexter: Resurrection cast expands with 3 actors reprising their roles, each of whom could be a problem for Michael C. Hall’s serial killer.

Deadline reports that Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet has joined the Dexter: Resurrection cast. Stonestreet will play a character named Al, who has a midwestern background and is believed to be a serial killer. According to the trade, Stonestreet will appear in four episodes of Dexter: Resurrection. The Emmy-winning actor celebrated the news by sharing the trade’s report on his casting on Instagram and expressing how excited he was to work with the “outstanding” Dexter: Resurrection team. While Stonestreet may be best known for his comedic role as Cameron Tucker in Modern Family, he has experience with dramatic characters on projects such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the HBO political thriller film Confirmation.

Stonestreet joins Dexter franchise veterans Hall, James Remar as Harry Morgan (Dexter’s late father who appears as the personification of his inner monologue), David Zayas as Angel Batista, and Jack Alcott as Harrison. The cast of newcomers includes big-name performers like Kill Bill lead Uma Thurman, How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, and Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter. While Dexter: Resurrection plot details are unknown, Thurman is known to be playing Charley, the head of security to Dinklage’s Leon Prater, a billionaire philanthropist with a dark secret who is reportedly the show’s primary antagonist. Ritter plays a renowned sommelier named Mia Lapierre, who is said to be hiding a “serial killer secret.” Aside from being called “Lowell,” little is known about Harris’ role.

It’s unclear how Dexter Morgan will meet these newcomers or how the returning characters factor into the story. However, fans know that at least one favorite character won’t return. Jennifer Carpenter confirmed she won’t appear in Dexter: Resurrection as Debra Morgan. While Carpenter reprised her role in Dexter: New Blood (with the deceased Debra replacing Harry as Dexter’s guiding ghost), the actress explained that she felt she “completed that box” but hoped that everyone involved in the new series is having “a wonderful time.”

While many fans question the need for another Dexter series, others argue Dexter: Resurrection can save the franchise. The original Dexter series was once praised as one of television’s best shows. However, its reputation was stained by weaker later seasons and two failed finales. There’s an argument to be made about letting the series rest, but some believe Dexter: Resurrection will be worth it if the new show can end Dexter Morgan’s story on a more satisfying note. It’s too early to tell how Dexter: Resurrection will fare in that regard, but the new series is undoubtedly rounding up a cast that is raising interest.

Dexter: Resurrection is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2025 on Paramount Plus.
