Unlike previous sets in Pokemon Pocket, there are no weak trainers in Triumphant Light. Every single trainer card is a supporter, and all of them have some type of competitive use. The variety of trainer cards in Triumphant Light ranges from broad abilities that work in any deck to those designed for energy-specific decks or ones that only work with certain Pokemon.

For those running steel, water, or decks that include Pokemon like Heracross, there is a lot to be happy about in Triumphant Light’s trainer card roster. Regardless of what is considered the best trainer card, there are no losers in this set.

Barry

Snorlax Can Finally Strike Back

More and more Pokemon are becoming efficient, and Barry is one of the few cards that reduce the energy requirement for an attack. Omitting the need for two normal energies gives basic Pokemon like Heracross and Snorlax a ton of burst damage. Snorlax, in particular, was used as a giant wall, but due to needing four energy to attack, it could only stall and never pose a real threat. Thanks to Barry, Snorlax can now attack for 100 damage, essentially KO’ing most non-EX basic and Stage one Pokemon.

Heracross is the other big winner, thanks to Barry. For just one energy after using Barry, Heracross has a chance to strike for 120 damage, making it a serious threat. Though cards with 120 HP, like Pikachu ex, have fallen out of favor, it’s still a significant amount of damage for a Grass Pokemon, which are typically more defensively oriented.

The first supporter that can bring discarded cards back into play, Celestic Elder has useful niche applications in several decks, especially those that only run Pokemon like Articuno and Pachirisu. Bringing back basic Pokemon that do not have high energy requirements allows you to return quickly to an offensive strategy.

Reviving a discarded basic Pokemon can lead to countless strategic plays, such as bringing one back to use its ability for that turn or reviving a low-value Pokemon to sacrifice it, buying yourself an extra turn to build energy for your remaining boss Pokemon.

Healing and max HP buffs are usually the best defensive options in Pokemon Pocket, but effects that prevent damage are even better. Adaman is one of the most accessible cards for damage reduction, offering more than double the effectiveness of Blue.

Metal cards commonly share the ability to reduce damage, as seen with Melmetal and Bastiodon. Adaman’s ability stacks with these Pokemon, giving a titan card like Melmetal a -50 damage reduction. Weaker cards like Skarmory will also benefit, gaining more opportunities to deal damage throughout the game. Adaman is the perfect tool to round out Steel decks in the rapidly growing metagame.

Iridia

Grass Pokemon have benefited the most from healing effects due to a powerful supporter in Erika, as well as various Pokemon with healing attacks and abilities, such as Venusaur EX, TSS Shaymin, and GA Butterfree. However, Water has emerged as the second-best deck for healing—possibly even the best—thanks to Iridia, which heals any Pokemon with Water energy for 40 HP.

Iridia can easily outscale Erika due to its ability to heal multiple Pokemon at once. Up to 160 HP can be restored in a single turn, which isn’t unrealistic thanks to top-tier energy accelerators like MI Vaporeon and Manaphy, which can distribute Water energy to multiple Pokemon simultaneously. Water decks have traditionally benefited from low energy costs and strong energy acceleration, but durability has been a major weakness.
