Monsters That Are Weak Against Dragon Weapons In Monster Hunter Wilds

Dragons in RPGs are often some of the most fearsome and that’s true in Monster Hunter Wilds. Arkveld, Guardian Arkveld, Gore Magala, Guardian Rathalos, Rathalos, Rathian, and Zoh Shia, who are all dragons, are weak to their own sauce as it were though. Players can even craft the best Dragon weapons by harvesting them for parts. To use Bows as an example, players can get the G. Veldian Arcum 1 from Guardian Arkveld. Arkveld and Gore Magala can also make some impressive Dragon-infused weapons.

In the post-game of Monster Hunter Wilds, players can also craft special weapons called Artians, giving them more options for all elements. Now, while those seven dragons are weak to this element, there are others who tremble before weapons like the G. Veldian Arcum 1. The Gravios, Guardian Doshaguma, and Guardian Fulgur Anjanath monsters are all also weak to Dragon-based attacks, but the other examples are mainly weak to Dragon attacks so let’s get down to how players can face these monsters.

Arkveld/Guardian Arkveld

The Cover Star Is Here

The mighty Arkveld, the cover monster of Monster Hunter Wilds, is only weak to Dragon-type elemental attacks. This is the same for the first version players will encounter, Guardian Arkveld. That said, there are no parts of the body that will get a boost in damage by using Dragon weapons alone.

Instead, players should either use a bladed weapon like a Great Sword or a blunt weapon like a Hammer in Monster Hunter Wilds. Either way, players will struggle against both monsters because they are tough. Arkveld is the final story boss of the game and it will put players through the testing waters. Even with a full multiplayer setup, they may struggle. It’s worth going through multiple times to get the best armor sets though and some choice weapons too.

Gore Magala

A Dark Dragon Returns

Fighting Gore Magala in Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Weakness: Dragon, Fire, and Thunder

Gore Magala is one of the hardest monsters to take down in Monster Hunter Wilds. It is massive, hits hard, and the weaknesses it does have are in very specific regions. It’s noted that it has elemental weaknesses against Dragon, Fire, and Thunder but Thunder gets no listed advantages. Dragon users can only target the antenna which is incredibly hard to hit.

These monsters are easy to pick off and fun to boot in Monster Hunter Wilds.

However, Fire weapons can target the antenna, and both wingarms to get a damage boost. Based on testing, overall, Dragon weapons seem to work better if players aim their weapon at the antenna which is common for most elder dragons in the game with this one first hailing from Monster Hunter 4. It was hard in 2013 when that game debuted in Japan on the 3DS in 2013 and Gore Magala remains just as hard today on modern consoles if not more so.

Guardian Rathalos/Rathalos

Beware Their Poison Fire

  • Weakness: Dragon and Thunder

The Guardian Rathalos is new to this game as are all other Guardian versions of classic monsters in the Monster Hunter series. Rathalos is a classic though, hailing from the first game on PS2 all the way back in 2004. It’s easiest to list the Guardian Rathalos and Rathalos together since they share the same weaknesses as Dragon and Thunder. Thunder weapons aren’t so much a factor for either of them though as they can only do extra damage against the head of a Rathalos and against both legs of a Guardian Rathalos.

Dragon weapons will tear these two titans to ribbons though. Against the Rathalos, players should aim for every part of the body except the legs and the Guardian Rathalos’ only safeguard against Dragon attacks is its tail. That said, both dragons are tough in Monster Hunter Wilds as their poison attacks and fiery breath, not to mention their dive bombing, can do equally serious damage against players.

Rathian

Another Classic From 2004

Fighting Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Weakness: Dragon and Thunder

A Rathian is a close cousin to the Rathalos only it has green skin and is slightly weaker. It can still breathe fire and poison players in Monster Hunter Wilds though. It’s also from the first game which makes sense why the two monsters look so much alike. Capcom is still using this method of cloning in the series to save time and energy by taking the skeleton of one monster and making subtle changes to create something new. RPGs do it all the time, so it’s not just a Capcom thing.

Now is as good a time as ever to jump into this 20+ year-old series.

Getting back to its vulnerabilities, a Rathian is weak in the same elements as a Rathalos. Thunder-based weapons will get a damage boost against the head but Dragon weapons are a must. Players should target the head, torso, both wings or the tail to take the Rathian down quickly. It’s as easy as that and now there are no more Rathalos/Rathian variants to discuss.

Zoh Shia

Crack Through Its Shell

Fighting Zoh Shia in Monster Hunter Wilds

Zoh Shia is kind of like the game’s first fake-out final boss because once players defeat it and get credits, the post-game will unlock in Monster Hunters Wilds. It’s one heck of a showdown too because this dragon is massive. It has wings and hands jutting out from said wings, almost like it was a human that transformed into a dragon or vice versa. It’s something straight out of the Dark Souls series instead of Monster Hunter except that it isn’t bleeding or oozing goo.

It’s a challenging final showdown for a Capcom boss fight because Zoh Shia’s size dominates most of the smaller arena. If players crafted a Dragon-based weapon before this fight, that would be killer as that is Zoh Shia’s only weakness. Players can target the head, neck, and left and right wingarms to score some critical hits. Once it has been taken down, players can congratulate themselves before moving on to more content.
