Monster Hunter Wilds has the greatest emphasis on narrative in the series yet. Its tale tells of a boy called Nata, his journey to the west, and his return courtesy of a hunter guild. During this adventure, you meet many colourful characters, each with their own distinct personalities.

“This Dream We Walk Through Is Fragile, And Only Through Constant Betterment Do We Delay Its End.”
Olivia
The action-packed prologue of Monster Hunter Wilds soon gives way to a more docile chapter-based structure. You start at camp, preparing your equipment and ensuring you have enough supplies for your expedition. You also run into Olivia, who will become a recurring guildmate.
Olivia is an experienced monster hunter, and while she doesn’t seem like the poetic type, this quote from her is surprisingly profound. In a harsh world like that of Monster Hunter Wilds, the only way to delay a demise out in the plains is by constantly getting better – both as a combatant and a strategist.

“I Used To Go Adventurin’ With A Hunter Just Like You.”
Gemma
From Gemma’s cadence when she says this line, it’s clear it was intended to be a subtle nod to Skyrim with its famous ‘adventurer like you’ quote. Gemma is much more of a contemporary talker than her elegant guildmates, so she’s the obvious pick to say this.

You’ll want to be on the lookout for these weapons when facing your foes in Monster Hunter Wilds.
However, this seemingly throwaway line comes back in the later chapters to have real importance to Gemma’s story. She was discouraged from becoming a blacksmith but went through with it – and her previous guildmates met an unfortunate demise that made her question herself. Your victory over a seemingly unstoppable monster finally puts her doubts to rest.

“This Is What Happens When Monsters Have A Leader. They’re Not Afraid Of Us Anymore.”
Alma
This is arguably the most frightening line ever spoken in Monster Hunter history. The only reason humans have been able to survive the harsh world of Monster Hunter is that they can get organized and use weapons. In short, they survive because they’re smart: they don’t want monsters getting smart too.
Yet the monsters do display signs of intelligence, and even more worryingly, they start getting organized. Humans can’t slash at them until they run away anymore: the monsters aren’t afraid. That makes eliminating their leader an urgent priority.

“What Was Broken Can Be Mended.”
Elder Ela
The people of Kunafa have a hard life. Their village is unfamiliar with weapons: their survival strategy stops at running away. They have a lot of children and senior citizens to take care of, with only a few young men to forage for food and draw away monsters.
It seems almost too cruel when their village is attacked by a monster and large chunks are destroyed: these are people you have dined with, who gave you Seikrets despite needing them desperately for themselves. Your party drives off the monster, and the village displays its stalwart nature that has kept it thriving until now, with the elder declaring that what was broken can be mended – it’s the fact that they’re all alive that counts.

“Don’t Go Down A Hole Without A Ladder.”
Satesh
The people of the Oilwell Basin are accustomed to planning ahead: they have to, given that they work with tar in a place brimming with fire monsters. When Satesh volunteers himself to be your guide, he gives you some wise words someone else told him: don’t go down a hole without a ladder.

Sage advice, given that the biggest reason for you getting knocked down by a monster will be your own lack of preparation. What Satesh is telling you is that you shouldn’t set out on an expedition before crafting the right items, eating a good meal, and making sure you have your potions packed.

“Why Hunt? Why Study? Because We Like To!”
Alma, Quoting The Everforge Inhabitants
In the fiery depths of the Everforge, Azuz, Alma meets many people who are living an unimaginably tough life. Their livelihoods depend on a yearly ceremony, and it goes wrong when your party arrives. She asks them why they do anything under such harsh circumstances and is met with laughter amidst the simplest answer of all: ‘Because we like to.’
Impressed, Alma starts applying this ideology to her own expeditions, using it to motivate herself to study and encourage you to hunt. If you like what you do, you’ll do it no matter how hard life gets.

“I Squirm. I Struggle. Ergo, I Am.”
Rove
Rove is different from the other Wudwuds: he may be just as cute and cuddly, but he’s also cool as ice. He’s not given to fright and panic like the other Wudwuds are: even when a giant spider is tying him up in its web, he maintains a clear head and a calm facade.

“By My Own Order, I Will Slay Zoh Shia.”
Hunter
Throughout the campaign of Monster Hunter Wilds, you’re forced to wait until Alma gives you the word go before you can hunt a monster. She has to tell you that it’s by the order of the guild you’re slaying every beast. This holds true until the final battle of the main story, where your hunter takes matters into their own hands.
Rather than force Nata to carry the weight of responsibility on his young shoulders, the hunter declares that they will slay the final monster. Not because they were told to but because it’s the right thing to do.
