Doom Director Wants To See You Beat The Dark Ages Without Guns

The three most important things about the Doom series are the gore, the heavy metal soundtrack, and the collection of weapons to rip and tear demons apart with. While the Doom Slayer can literally rip enemies apart with his bare hands, there’s nothing like strafing with the super shotgun to dispatch enemies one at a time.

From machine guns to plasma rifles, the slayer has had an incredible arsenal over the years, but it looks like he’s going to get his most brutal collection of weapons in Doom: The Dark Ages. A prequel to the 2016 reboot, The Dark Ages will give the Slayer weapons from the old world that are more rooted in brutality than technology. However, according to director Hugo Martin, you could technically beat the game without any guns at all.

Can Doom: The Dark Ages Be Beaten Without Guns?

It all comes down to the shield saw we’ve seen in the trailers and gameplay showcase. The Slayer can use this terrifying weapon in many ways, including parrying enemies, melee attacking them, and even tossing it like Captain America. So, when Martin was asked by PC Gamer if players could perform ‘no gun’ runs, he said it would be “slightly out of the bounds,” but dedicated players can make it happen.

“If people could beat Dark Souls with no damage and pistol-only Nightmare runs on [Doom 2016],” he said, “I’m sure people will figure out how to do it with the shield and the melee, because they’re pretty powerful, but you’d have a hard time, that’s for sure.”

The kinds of things we’ve seen players accomplish in otherwise hard games. As Martin mentioned, people have completed several Dark Souls games without getting hit even once, so there’s a high possibility that someone or the other will be able to rip and tear through Doom: The Dark Ages without using any of the game’s guns.
