Why Was Black Clover Interrupted?
Black Clover aired its last episode (#170) on March 30, 2021. At the time, the anime was too close to the manga and Pierrot decided that, instead of creating filler arcs, it would be best to put the series on hiatus.
Additionally, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War had already been announced and was likely in production. Bleach TYBW meant a huge change for the studio, as they decided to put other projects on hold to focus on it, and, with the positive feedback, Pierrot is now moving to seasonal production. There has been harsh criticism of the quality of Black Clover‘s animation.
Despite the hiatus, the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King movie was released globally on Netflix in 2023.
Possible Hints at Black Clover’s Return
For now, there is no official information about the anime returning anytime soon, but Tatsuya Yoshihara, the director of the series, has replied to fans in a way that makes it look like a continuation of the story is in the works, and that he wants it to be better than the first TV anime — it could just be lost in translation, though.
Pierrot will make announcements on AnimeJapan 2025 on March 22, 2025, so there may be news about Black Clover there. Even if they plan to resume the anime in one or two years, it’s possible they will release information about it.
Pierrot Might Have Other Priorities
While a return is possible, probably on a seasonal schedule like Bleach: TYBW, Pierrot might focus on other projects first. Reportedly, the studio is postponing new Bleach episodes to focus on a special anniversary series for Naruto (which was announced and postponed in 2023).
Besides Black Clover, Pierrot has also put Boruto on indefinite hiatus. If either of them resumes in the near future, it will probably be after Naruto and the final season of Bleach. They could work on both Boruto and Black Clover if they are able to come up with a proper schedule; for example, delivering only one season/cour of each anime per year.
Given that the manga is in its final arc, and new chapters come at a quarterly frequency now (after a long hiatus), it may be best for Pierrot to wait for the series to end to adapt it into new seasons.
Where Will It Be Streamed If It Returns?
Black Clover has been streaming on Crunchyroll since its debut. However, as the movie was released as a Netflix-exclusive, there is a possibility that it could move to another service if or when it ever returns.
A new season probably means new streaming negotiations, so the series would likely be up for new deals. Given that Black Clover is quite popular, and many services are now interested in offering anime content, there may have been talks from many players about streaming the next season since the anime was put on a break.
Black Clover is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
