Developer Frogwares recently revealed the first gameplay footage for The Sinking City 2, and it appears to be an exciting blend of Lovecraftian cosmic horror and Resident Evil. This brand-new look into The Sinking City 2 was revealed as a way to drum up hype for the game’s crowdfunding campaign, and the sneak preview promises plenty of mystery and strong visuals.
Teasing the game with its gameplay footage worked wonders, as The Sinking City 2 met its crowdfunding goal in less than two hours. Since the crowdfunding campaign launched, Frogwares has exceeded its original target, and as of now, the Kickstarter page boasts nearly $250,000 in funding. It’s a great achievement for the developer, and what’s even more intriguing, is that this time around, The Sinking City 2 is leaning more into Resident Evil-inspired features. Frogwares’ cosmic horror title isn’t the first game to take note of Capcom’s beloved zombie series either. Last year’s remake of Silent Hill 2 took a similar approach, and it could work quite well for The Sinking City 2.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake Was First Met With Skepticism
Bloober Team, the developers of Layers of Fear and The Blair Witch, took on the bold task of remaking Silent Hill 2. Remaking such a beloved psychological thriller is no easy task, but Bloober Team managed to pull it off incredibly well. Leading up to the game’s launch, though, many were skeptical. Bloober Team’s choice to take a more Resident Evil-inspired approach made a lot of fans worried it would be too action-oriented instead of story-driven. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case, as both were balanced quite well. The new over-the-shoulder camera angle added extra tension, while the combat forced players to make sure every shot counted.

The Sinking City 2’s Resident Evil Inspiration is Clear
Officially branded by Frogwares as a third-person survival horror game, the genre isn’t the only Resident Evil quality that The Sinking City has to it. The staple over-the-shoulder camera angle comes into play, but even a lot of the grotesque body horror and lighting feels reminiscent of the long-running zombie franchise. Many have been eagerly awaiting The Sinking City 2. Its predecessor had a strong premise, but based on the sequel’s footage, there already appear to be a great number of improvements. Marked as an action adventure title, the first Sinking City focused more on exploration and investigation, and while it had shining moments, a harder lean into horror could be just what the series needs.
The first Sinking City was released back in 2019.
Frogwares’ Genre Turn Could Be the Key to Success
- Contributing to The Sinking City 2 Kickstarter is the only way to receive a physical copy of the indie title.
- There is currently no set release date for The Sinking City 2, but the Kickstarter page states that the estimated delivery of rewards is currently December.
While Bloober Team’s changes to Silent Hill 2 were first met with caution, it ultimately proved to work, and the same is likely to happen to The Sinking City 2. Ultimately, the Resident Evil influence is even more fitting for a Lovecraftian story filled with body horror and eerie environments.
Now that The Sinking City 2 has met its crowdfunding goal, the wait for a release date announcement continues. There’s no way to know when The Sinking City 2 will be ready for fans to jump into, but based on its gameplay, Frogwares is potentially promising a horror tale worth the wait.
