Outside of just dealing basic damage, a lot of weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds have additional elemental damage that can target a monster’s weakness to deal extra damage. There are also some weapons that focus on status ailments, letting you poison or even put monsters to sleep in battle.
While monsters won’t stay asleep for long if you’re still trying to kill them, sleep can be a useful tool in controlling the battle or setting them up to be captured. Here’s how to put monsters to sleep and exactly how sleep weapons work in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How To Sleep Weapons Work In Monster Hunter Wilds
Instead of an element such as fire or water, some weapons will have the element Sleep. Instead of dealing elemental damage, the weapon will build up sleep on a monster that is hit with it on top of the basic damage done from the attack. While it can take a lot of hits to build up, especially depending on the number next to the Sleep element, hitting a monster enough times with that weapon will eventually put the monster to sleep. Some monsters can also be weak or resistant to sleep, making it easier or harder for them to be put to sleep.
Much like a monster’s health bar, there is no bar indicating how close you are to inflicting sleep on a monster, but as long as you keep attacking with a sleep weapon it will happen a few times throughout a hunt. Monsters that are asleep will wake up as soon as they are attacked again, but forcefully putting them to sleep can help give you a minute to heal or set up a trap for when the monster wakes up.

Sleep Ammo |

Sleep Toads |
Found throughout the world, though it can also put the player to sleep. |
Drugged Meat can be a useful option, though when in combat, a monster won’t stop to eat. Your best bet is to use Sleep ammo or a sleep weapon, as Sleep Toads are also a dangerous tool to use unless you are standing far enough away. While your Palico can wake you up, sometimes that won’t trigger, and you can be left in more danger than you anticipated.
