While there is an abundance of melee weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2, there are seven variations of the default knife that players can find through specific encounters and locations. Knives are the perfect tool for skinning animals, killing enemies during stealth, and genuinely just looking like a cool outlaw with the right tools for the job.

Hunting Knife
Arthur’s Customizable Knife
- How to Get the Hunting Knife: Arthur Morgan’s default knife – equipped automatically at the start of Chapter 1.
The Hunting Knife is the default knife of Arthur Morgan, acquired as soon as players begin their journey in Red Dead Redemption 2. There is no way to get rid of the Hunting Knife, nor is there a way to lose it. This knife acts as the standard weapon for melee, along with being used as a tool for skinning animals, so players can’t get rid of it. The Hunting Knife seems a bit plain and ordinary, but head to any Gunsmith to customize the knife, which will see engravings, carvings, wood grains, and metals, all added to the knife.

A Knife with a Handle Made from a Stag’s Antler
- How to Get the Antler Knife: Found on the corpse of a hunter with a dead grizzly bear on top of him, North West of Hanging Dog Ranch, Big Valley, West Elizabeth.
The Wild West can be a horrifying place to live, and each day can most certainly be a new fight for survival. No evidence is clearer than what awaits players near Hanging Dog Ranch, where they can discover the corpse of a grizzly bear and a hunter who both battled to death. While neither side won the fight, Arthur can take home a sweet new collectible for his knife range.

Civil War Knife
The Old Trench Knife for Confederate Soldiers
- How to Get the Civil War Knife: Head into the basement of Fort Brennand, West of Van Horn Trading Post in Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover, and pick up the knife from the crate in the center of the room.
The Civil War Knife brings some history into Arthur Morgan’s life, as it provides him with a bowie knife that’s anything but new. This might be a solid blade thanks to its large D-shaped handguard, but it’s also covered in rust and holds an estranged past since it was the knife of a Confederate soldier – the losing side of the Civil War that ended in 1865, 34 years before Red Dead Redemption 2.

Jawbone Knife
The Stegosaurus Knife That’s Actually Just a Coyote Bone
- How to Get the Jawbone Knife: Find all 30 Dinosaur Bones in ‘A Test of Faith’ and visit Deborah MacGuiness’ homestead at Firewood Rise, Cumberland Forest, New Hanover.
The incredible reward for fighting through many states and uncovering 30 Dinosaur Bones in Red Dead Redemption 2 is… a Jawbone Knife. Not only will players be amazed by Deborah MacGuiness’ wild discovery of the Totalisaurus, but they will have to leave with a knife that is claimed to be made from a Stegosaurus when in actuality, it’s just the jawbone of a coyote.
3
Wide-Blade Knife
A Not-So-Special Knife for Back-Stabbers
- How to Get the Wide-Blade Knife: Picked up from the corpse within the Beryl’s Dream Mine, North West of Mount Shann in Big Valley, West Elizabeth – accessed by blowing up the blocked entrance with the dynamite trigger.
Those who venture into Beryl’s Dream aren’t just going to find a new hat to wear in dark areas, but also a new knife to make their acquaintance. The Wide-Blade Knife isn’t anything special, as it doesn’t exactly have any cool and unique features or even extra damage. It’s still worth grabbing this knife, as it’s a key part of an investigation into an unsolved murder since the knife is found deep in an abandoned and collapsed mine – embedded into a stranger’s back with no reward in sight.
2
Ornate Dagger
An Occult Dagger That Belongs to a Vampire
The Ornate Dagger is the only knife in Red Dead Redemption 2 that is missable, as players who do not loot this off of the Vampire after killing him will not have the opportunity to get it again. The Ornate Dagger is a very special knife in terms of its design thanks to its ritual carving and gold handle, and the fact that players must solve a vampire hunt in Saint Denis to get it makes it all the more iconic.
Potential spoilers ahead for Red Dead Redemption 2!
1
John’s Knife
John Marston’s Customizable Clip-Point Blade
- How to Get John’s Knife: Automatically acquired once players begin Epilogue – Part One after Chapter 6.
John’s Knife has its own distinct visual style from Arthur’s Hunting Knife, and while it plays identically to the latter, it’s still got a unique shape with its clip-point blade that seems not only sharp to the touch but sharp to the sight. This isn’t a blade to mess around with, but those who do wish to can further customize John’s Knife at a Gunsmith.
