Monster Hunter Wilds has a frankly absurd amount of mechanics present in it, and that’s meant as a compliment. There are so many different things going on, both during a fight and outside of fights, when you’re in your Camp and preparing for the next one.

One of the things that you’ll spend the least amount of time worrying about in Camp, but can still have a tremendous impact on how a fight plays out, are Mantles. Mantles are earned naturally while playing through the campaign, and each Mantle has a dramatically different and powerful effect to make use of.
Mantles are ranked by how often they’re going to be useful; certain Mantles may shine particularly bright in the right instance, while other Mantles are useful in just about any situation.

Ghillie Mantle
Makes You Invisible To Monsters
The Ghillie Mantle is the only mantle that you’re going to start the game with, as it’s available right from the get-go. The Ghillie Mantle makes you entirely invisible to monsters, and you can slap it on mid-fight if you need to. It’s going to give you a chance to recover in whatever way you need to, whether it’s getting rid of a negative effect or just getting some health back.
The Ghillie Mantle can also be used to great effect just before a fight, too. You can use this Mantle to ensure you get to sneak up on monsters, allowing you to get in position for whatever attack you’re looking to land, whether that’s a specific weapon attack you want to use as an opener or a stealth attack.
This is by no means a useless Mantle. But during combat, most of the other Mantles are going to provide a more positive effect and allow you to stay engaged with a monster instead of breaking away from them.

Rocksteady Mantle
Increases Your Defense, Improves Damage Reactions, And Lessens Certain Effects
The Rocksteady Mantle is a very good defensive option; don’t let its spot on this list fool you. It can be used to great effect in many situations, particularly in those fights where you suspect you’re going to take quite a few more hits than you would like. This will slightly lessen the effect of those hits and make you less susceptible to effects like roars, tremors, and wind pressure, helping you take fewer hits.
But for players looking to maximize their damage potential, this Mantle is going to get skipped over. Sure, it will make fights a little bit easier, but it won’t make fights go any quicker because it does nothing for your damage output. You can compensate for that with certain items like Demondrug, but those are consumable, and if your Mantle helped in that regard, you wouldn’t need to use a resource.
3
Corrupted Mantle
Slowly Drains Your Health, But Increases Your Attack And Affinity
The Corrupted Mantle is the most offensive-minded Mantle and also the only Mantle that comes with a negative effect to balance out the positive effect it provides: this Mantle is going to kill you slowly while noticeably increasing your damage output. You can compensate for the damage you take with this Mantle by using potions or other healing items, but that effect can create a disastrous situation if you take a heavy hit while wearing it.

However, the damage increase and affinity gain increase that wearing this Mantle provides can make a meaningful difference in how long it takes to take a monster down. This would be especially true if multiple Hunters are wearing one at the same time in a multiplayer hunt.
This is high-risk, high-reward, and Hunters who are very confident in their abilities are going to find this Mantle suits them just fine.
2
Mending Mantle
Provides A Healing Effect
The Mending Mantle is, in many ways, a slight upgrade over the Rocksteady Mantle. There are arguments to be made in either case, and certain situations are going to favor one over the other, but the Mending Mantle is going to provide a better benefit in more situations. This gives you a burst of healing a few moments after you put it on and follows that up with some healing over time until the effects wear off.
This is going to save you one or two potions in the long run. In more drawn-out fights where you’re taking hits and getting lower in your potion stock, this will make a big difference. But it’s also going to mean you don’t have to worry about stocking up on Herbs and Honey quite as often as you would otherwise since you’ll be digging into your potion reserves with less regularity.
1
Evasion Mantle
Improves Dodging Invulnerability And Can Increase Attack Power
The only Mantle that provides defensive and offensive bonuses is the Evasion Mantle, which will win out in many situations. This will improve the window of invulnerability you gain when dodging, meaning that you won’t have to dodge with perfect timing to avoid attacks. But if you do time a dodge particularly well, you’ll gain an attack power buff briefly afterward.
This Mantle helps you keep the pressure on whatever monster you face. You won’t have to worry about being picture-perfect with your dodging, and instead of backing up and/or healing, you’ll be able to punish the monster for attacking in the first place with your increased damage.
