Summary

  • Ahead of a planned anniversary celebration of God of War, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has squashed any rumors about an announcement.
  • In the leadup to the event, it was heavily rumored that the Greek titles would be getting a remaster for modern hardware.
  • Many expected the announcement to take place at the anniversary event, though that is clearly not happening.

With rumors swirling around about a remaster of the Greek-era titles on modern hardware, Santa Monica Studio, the team behind God of War, has come out to squash any rumors of a planned announcement at this month’s 20th anniversary celebration.

In a post shared on social media, Santa Monica has clearly stated the following:

With such a stellar lineup and all the anticipation we’ve seen around the anniversary, we do want to be clear that there are no planned announcements for this event.

In other words, if you were planning on buying a ticket to the event in the hopes of seeing a trailer, don’t. That, of course, doesn’t mean the ongoing rumors don’t have any validity, but rather, the event is meant as a celebration above all else.

How We Got Here

Late last month, reliable industry insider Jeff Grubb shared that a remaster of the Greek titles is being eyeballed for March. The franchise as a whole will be celebrating 20 years on March 22, the date that Sony first released God of War on the PS2.

Those rumors back up claims from October 2024 that not only would the original trilogy be ported to modern hardware, but so would the PSP-era (Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus) titles, as well as the prequel, Ascension.

In honor of the franchise’s anniversary, a gallery event at Nucleus is being held, complete with art exhibitions, as well as an anniversary panel that will also include a signing from the devs and cast. That made it a clear target for speculation for a potential announcement, though it’s now been made abundantly clear that it won’t be happening.
