Avowed features a rich, choice-driven narrative, which is no surprise given its roots in the Pillars of Eternity universe. It thrives on world-building, compelling lore, and pivotal decisions that shape your journey. When you first arrive in Dawnshore, you are immediately faced with one such turning point. Message From Afar is the first moment where you get an opportunity to have a two-way conversation with the Voice inside your head. This is also where you must make your first big choice. Will you accept its offer of power or turn it away? Here is what happens if you choose to help or refuse the Voice in Avowed.

Should You Help the Voice in the Message From Afar Quest?
Once you have defeated the Dreamthrall Elder Brown Bear and spoken with Aedyran Ambassador Hylgard during the Message From Afar quest, interact with the large Adra pillar in the back of the grove to finally speak with the mysterious Voice in Avowed.
You can choose any of the given dialogues without ramifications to learn how the Voice feels connected to you, as well as about a corruption poisoning the Living Lands, its creatures, and its people. Finally, the Voice will offer to help heal the corrupted grove you are in by exchanging “a favor for a favor”.
You will be forced to make your first big choice in Avowed:
- Yes. I’ll help you.
- No. I’m not making a deal.
If you choose to help the Voice in the Strangleroot, you will be rewarded with the Dream Touch Godlike ability in Avowed. It heals and revives all nearby companions, which can be pretty useful in a tough situation. Additionally, the corrupted grove will be healed, and the vines blocking your path ahead will be removed.
If you refuse to help the Voice in the Strangleroot, you will be rewarded with Godlike’s Will, a passive that grants you a free ability point to spend. The way forward will still be cleared, but you will have done nothing to heal the corruption. The Strangleroot will remain tainted with a foul-looking green haze in the air. The Voice will be displeased with your decision, but it will not affect Avowed’s endings.
Should You Accept or Reject the Voice’s Power in Avowed?
Having an extra ability point to spend in either your Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard ability trees surely sounds like an excellent option, but make sure to accept the Voice’s offer of power during Message From Afar in Avowed. This is because Godlike’s Will can also be unlocked later in the game. Its only requirement is to refuse any offer of power. You will have two more opportunities to reject the Voice’s offer after completing Message From Afar: first in Shadows of the Past in Naku Kubel, and then in Our Dreams Divide Us Still in Galawain’s Tusk.
However, you can only unlock Dream Touch during Message From Afar, making it a missable Godlike ability in Avowed. Its healing, especially to revive fallen companions, is far more useful in the early game than an additional point in the ability tree. Hence, accept the Voice’s power to unlock Dream Touch, and later in the game, reject the Voice’s power to unlock Godlike’s Will if you want the extra ability point.
