Rise of the Ronin PC Port Seems to Have Some Problems

Summary

  • Rise of the Ronin’s PC port has serious performance issues.
  • Optimization problems require a powerful PC for solid gameplay.
  • Team Ninja has struggled with PC releases in the past.

Several previews of the upcoming Rise of the Ronin PC port have indicated there are some serious issues present that need to be resolved by Team Ninja. Arriving almost a year after its PlayStation 5 release, Rise of the Ronin wouldn’t be the first time a Team Ninja title has had trouble on PC.

In March 2024, Rise of the Ronin launched to mostly positive reviews. While it fell short of widespread critical acclaim, it still came in for plenty of praise for its historical narrative and strong RPG elements. Its PC port was confirmed in January 2025, and plenty of gamers were excited to finally have the chance to play Rise of the Ronin on the platform. With just a few days to go until its release, it seems there are a few major issues with the experience.

Rise of the Ronin’s PC Release Might Be Poorly Timed

Team Ninja has announced that Rise of the Ronin is coming to PC very soon, but it’s not the only open-world samurai game set for release.

As first reported by PushSquare, the upcoming Rise of the Ronin PC release has some major problems, particularly related to its performance. Optimization seems to be a massive issue, and Rise of the Ronin “demands a disproportionately powerful rig to deliver an acceptable experience,” according to some early previews. This comes somewhat as a surprise, given the PlayStation 5 version was frequently criticized for what some felt were already outdated graphics saved by solid art direction. It’s always possible that the previews have been played on a version that is missing a patch that will be available at launch, but it’s not a great first impression.

Rise of the Ronin on PC Apparently Has Big Performance Problems

Unfortunately, it’s not the first time that Team Ninja has had trouble with a PC release in recent times. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was review-bombed on Steam upon its launch in March 2023, with that title also suffering from big performance issues despite releasing across all platforms on the same date. Notably, both Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Rise of the Ronin use the Katana Engine. Hopefully, these early performance issues are something Team Ninja can quickly overcome with optimization patches.

Team Ninja is undertaking a particularly busy 2025. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black has already been released by the developer this year, with the Rise of the Ronin PC port now just around the corner. There was also the surprise announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4, which is currently planned for launch later in 2025. That’s not to mention the dating simulator Venus Vacation Prism: Dead or Alive Xtreme. These projects may not take up the same amount of resources at Team Ninja, but hopefully, it can keep the quality high.
