How to Deal With Monster Roars in Monster Hunter Wilds

Everything a monster does in Monster Hunter Wilds is meant to be something the player can deal with, mitigate, or outright block, including roar attacks. After all, the entire premise of the Hunter’s Guild is an organization that studies everything a monster does in order to figure out a way to hunt it effectively. It would be strange if there wasn’t a way to counter roars, a move most monsters have access to.

Roars do not mean the end of a hunt, but they mess up the flow of combat, interrupt key abilities, and stun hunters into inaction. It’s not a dire weakness, but a major annoyance that keeps getting more aggravating each time it happens. Luckily, there are multiple ways to counteract it.

The Element stat of weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds is never properly explained in-game. Here is what it does.

How to Counter Monster Roars in MH Wilds

There are a few different methods players can use to negate the effect of a monster’s roar during combat in Monster Hunter Wilds. Armor skills and weapons play a role, but even if you don’t have the necessary equipment, certain mechanics can serve as excellent substitutes.

There are two types of roars: weak roars and strong roars. Both of them stun for the same duration, and neither do damage. The only difference between them is that the weak one is easier to negate than the strong one.

Use a Shield

Putting up a Guard before a monster roars will completely block the effects of the roar. Only weapons with a shield or a shield-like mechanic can be used to Guard. Out of the 14 weapons in the game, six can Guard. They are Great Sword, Sword & Shield, Lance, Gunlance, Charge Blade, and Heavy Bowgun.

Equip Earplugs Skill

When equipped, the Earplugs Skill mitigates the effects of a monster’s roar. Earplugs has three levels, each making the hunter progressively better at dealing with roars until they can block them completely at Level 3.

  • Level 1: Reduces the effects of weak monster roars.
  • Level 2: Nullifies weak monster roars and reduces the effects of strong monster roars.
  • Level 3: Nullifies weak and strong monster roars.

Earplugs is available on certain High-Rank armor sets, the Earplugs Charm I, and the Earplugs Jewel 2.

Perfect Dodge

It’s possible to perfectly dodge roars to avoid all damage and stagger. This requires very, very precise timing and can be easy to mess up. However, players running the Dual Blades or Bow will want to get good at this method because it’s a core part of their toolkit.

Counter Attack

The Long Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds has a special weapon combo that allows it to perform a counterattack when a monster uses an attack. This works on roars as well as regular attacks. The Long Sword gives the hunter invincibility frames during the counterattack window, ensuring they receive no damage and are unaffected by the stagger.

Run Out Of Range

Monster roars have an AoE with a limited range. Most times, players will be within melee distance of the monster, which makes it hard to notice this, but it’s true. If you can predict when a monster is going to roar, it’s very easy to simply outrun the area of effect before it happens. This is counter-intuitive, however, as the entire point of dodging roars in most cases is to avoid interrupting the DPS window.

Monsters often roar near the start of a fight and when you re-engage them after they relocate areas. Pay special attention at these times to get better at predicting when a roar is coming.
