Characters Who Luffy Hates The Most

It’s hard to get on the bad side of Monkey D. Luffy, considering he almost always manages to see the best in a person, no matter how malicious or evil they may be. It takes a lot for the protagonist of One Piece to truly hate someone’s guts, but there’s a selection of characters in this universe who have made themselves lifelong enemies of Luffy because of the way they have treated him, his crew, and his family.

Though Luffy has shown numerous times that he’s more than happy to work alongside a former villain if they have genuinely turned a corner, it’s unlikely he would be anywhere near as willing to team up with these individuals below, considering how much he despises them. It’s time to see how these One Piece characters became so hated, and whether there is any chance of them redeeming themselves in the future.

Captain Kuro

Kuro Sees Crewmates As Little More Than Useless Pawns, Unlike Luffy, Who Views Them As Family

• First Appearance: Episode 9

Unlike Luffy, who values all of his nakama as irreplaceable, Kuro, who first appears in Syrup Village near the beginning of the series, is the complete opposite. Kuro views crewmates as nothing more than pawns who he is willing to throw away for his own selfish schemes, to the point where he even admitted he was willing to sacrifice all of them just to get one step closer to achieving his maniacal plan.

In many ways, Kuro is the exact opposite of Luffy, and upon hearing just how mercilessly the former captain acted towards his own crew, it drives Luffy into a frenzy of emotions. Thankfully, Kuro eventually got what he deserved at the hands of the Straw Hat captain, though whether he will turn up again in the future, only time will tell.

Charlos

The Spoiled And Vindictive Celestial Dragon Received The Full Force Of Luffy’s Punch

• First Appearance: Episode 393

No One Piece fan can ever forget the moment when Luffy, despite everyone warning him not to, throws a punch at the Celestial Dragon known as Charlos in Sabaody. However, it’s worth going over what exactly led to Luffy having so much hatred for the man in the first place, since they only interact for no more than a few seconds.

After stepping into the auction house, Luffy witnesses Charlos’ snobbery first-hand when he places a bid for the mermaid Camie to become his new slave, after already riding to the auction house on top of one of his current slaves. He then proceeds to shoot Hachi, one of Luffy’s close friends, completely out of the blue. All of this was enough to let Luffy know that this is someone who stands completely against his own ideals of friendship and freedom, which eventually results in a devastating punch fueled by hatred and anger.

Crocodile

Luffy Can Never Forget How Crocodile Killed Thousands Of Innocent People Back In Alabasta

• First Appearance: Episode 76

Crocodile is the first Shichibukai Luffy and the Straw Hats meet along their grand adventure, and it’s fair to say the effortlessly stylish and malicious leader of Alabasta provides a pretty clear idea of why this group of pirates is so feared across the world. As part of his grand Utopia plan, Crocodile instigates a civil war in Alabasta which results in the deaths of thousands of soldiers and innocent civilians alike.

This already gets Luffy’s blood boiling, but what pushes him over the edge is seeing Vivi break down crying after everything Crocodile has done to her once beautiful kingdom. When Luffy once again meets Crocodile in Impel Down, he shows hesitancy to let him out of his cell and only does so when Ivankov essentially demands him to, showing how much of a grudge he still holds.

Doflamingo

Doflamingo’s Heinous Actions In Dressrosa Didn’t Sit Well With Luffy

• First Appearance: Episode 151

Most villains in the series will have at least some humanity to them which Luffy can eventually pick up on and feed into, but Doflamingo is the exception. Due to his tragic upbringing which saw him be ‘betrayed’ by the Celestial Dragons, the regular folk, and his own family, Doflamingo would come to hate everyone in the world outside of his own makeshift crew. As a result, he was more than happy to ruin the lives of thousands of Dressrosa’s residents, especially with how he was able to essentially erase them from existence by using Sugar to turn them into toys.

After venturing through Dressrosa, Luffy becomes gradually more and more enraged at Doflamingo’s actions, especially after witnessing Doflamingo betraying Luffy’s old rival, Bellamy, without a second thought. All of this leads to an epic clash between the two where Luffy’s rage unlocks his Gear 4 form for the very first time.

Kaido

Seeing The State Of Wano Made Luffy Realize Just How Despicable Kaido Truly Is

• First Appearance: Episode 736

Ruining an entire country and treating its people like dirt is a proven way to get Luffy to hate someone, which is why he comes to despise the ferocious Yonko known as Kaido. In an attempt to bolster his defenses and create an unstoppable army, Kaido essentially turned the wonderful country of Wano into his own munitions base, littering the gorgeous landscapes with factories and weapon facilities.

As for the people themselves, Kaido has not a care in the world for the safety or well-being of Wano’s residents; something Luffy quickly finds out when running into Tama, who has been starving for months on end. Kaido’s arrival in Wano marked the point where the country would truly fall into ruin, and due to being the man behind so many needless deaths, including of Kouzuki Oden, Luffy can never forgive the dangerous Yonko.

Arlong

Luffy Took Great Satisfaction In Beating The Snot Out Of Arlong For All He Had Done To Nami And Her Family

• First Appearance: Episode 31

After Nami suddenly leaves the crew, seemingly in an attempt to steal all their riches for herself, Luffy and the gang eventually come to find out that this is far from the case. In actuality, Nami is trying to pay Arlong, a violent Fishman, in an attempt to convince him to leave her village alone. Arlong not only killed Nami’s mother but also blackmailed the young girl, only to go back on his word once Nami had finally earned the Berries that he had asked her for.

Once Luffy comes to realize just how despicable Arlong is, and the amount of suffering he has put Nami through, he holds nothing back when pummeling the Fishman in front of his entire crew. This would be the first time fans got to see just how deeply Luffy cares about his nakama, even if they decide to turn on him.

Orochi

After Witnessing How He Treated His Own People, Luffy Gained A Burning Hatred For Wano’s Corrupt Shogun

• First Appearance: Episode 921

Kaido may have been Straw Hats’ main target upon arriving in Wano, but after exploring the country and speaking to a few of the residents, they soon understand that the shogun, Orochi, is just as bad as the Yonko himself. Saying Orochi cares little about his own people would be an understatement, as this was the guy who willingly fed the residents leftover SMILE fruits, which restricted them from expressing any emotion other than laughter.

Additionally, he would also willingly let the residents of Wano starve, while he enjoys big banquets in the comfort of his tower. Upon meeting characters like Tama, who have experienced much hardship due to Orochi’s actions, Luffy comes to hate the shogun with a burning passion, so it’s unfortunate that he was too occupied with Kaido to deal the final blow.

Blackbeard

The Man Who Got Ace Imprisoned And Kicked Off The Marineford War Is Arguably Luffy’s Biggest Enemy

• First Appearance: Episode 146

It’s ironic that Luffy and Blackbeard shared a few cherry pies and inspirational words with one another when they first met back in Jaya, considering Teach would go on to become Luffy’s greatest enemy not long after. Much of this boils down to Teach’s betrayal of the Whitebeard crew, and more specifically, Ace, who is thrown in prison after being handed over to the Marines upon his defeat at the hands of Blackbeard, which eventually leads to his unfortunate demise.

In fact, Blackbeard even mocks Ace directly to Luffy’s face when they run into one another in Impel Down, before the whole Marineford War even begins. Though the two have had barely any interactions since the timeskip, there’s no doubt that when they do meet once again, Luffy is going to let his fists do the talking for him.

Akainu

Akainu Was There During A Traumatic Moment

• First Appearance: Episode 278

Back during the Marineford Arc, where Luffy and the Whitebeard pirates declared war on the Marines in an attempt to save Ace, Akainu seemed to Luffy like little more than just another obstacle in his way at first. However, just as Luffy and Ace are about to escape the battlefield, Akainu manages to outsmart Ace, luring him back with his cruel words about Whitebeard, before then plunging his lava-covered fist through the young pirate’s chest.

Witnessing his brother die right in front of his eyes breaks Luffy emotionally, and leads him down a spiral of depression soon after. Luffy may be a pretty forgiving guy, but there’s no way he will ever make peace with the Fleet Commander after what he did to Ace, especially since Akainu seems to have not an inch of remorse for what he did that fateful day in Marineford.
