Hunter X Hunter has one of the most complex power systems, called Nen. On a fundamental level, Nen is similar to systems in other anime, in that it refers to a character’s inner aura. The differentiation comes with multiple categories, the addition of covenants or contracts, and the practical application of Nen.

Nen abilities also differ between each category. Because of different categories and the ability to manipulate aura with incredible creativity, characters in Hunter X Hunter have developed some of the most unique abilities seen in anime. These Nen abilities can range from healing to dimensional teleportation. There is simply no end to the creativity found in Nen abilities.

Perfect Plan

Meleoron

By holding his breath, Meleoron can activate Perfect Plan and essentially disappear from existence. He can take this a step further by being in contact with another person and activating God’s Accomplice. This allows both Meleoron and that person to use Perfect Plan.

While Perfect Plan is active, you cannot see or even feel the user. This allows Meleoron to launch attacks without ever being detected. While Meleoron’s opponent will certainly feel the attack, they won’t be able to know who or where it came from.

Doctor Blythe

Neferpitou

Doctor Blythe is a healing ability developed by Neferpitou to heal Kite. This ability summons Doctor Blythe who is physically connected to Pitou’s tail. Doctor Blythe can virtually heal any injury given enough time. Pitou was even able to fix Kite’s body and reattach his head.

The ability does come at a cost because Pitou cannot use her Nen as long as Doctor Blythe is healing someone, leaving Pitou completely open to incoming attacks. However, this is a small drawback considering how versatile Doctor Blythe is.

Bungee Gum

Hisoka Morow

Bungee Gum gives Hisoka’s aura the properties of both rubber and gum. This allows him to extend his aura and attach it to any object. Additionally, you cannot see the aura if you’re not using Gyo at all times. Don’t underestimate the strength of the aura either, as we’ve never seen it break under force.

While this ability may seem weak on the surface, Hisoka has found some of the most unique ways to trick his opponents with Bungee Gum. It’s also useful for defending against smaller projectiles, as we see Hisoka blocking Gotoh’s coins in the final Hunter X Hunter arc.

Hide And Seek

Knov

Knov can manifest an area with multiple floors and rooms in another dimension. Not only can Knov store food and essential supplies in this space, but he can also grant others access to his dimension through his portals.

This is an incredibly useful ability to have, because Knov can enter this area any time he wants. This allows him to quickly escape from a battle and even restock on supplies. It’s also great for long-haul missions or infiltrations.

God Speed

Killua Zoldyck

God speed is a Nen ability that allows Killua’s body to move without thinking. It also gives him immense speed that is unmatched by the majority of the characters in Hunter X Hunter. Just using this ability alone makes Killua one of the strongest characters in Hunter X Hunter.

While God Speed doesn’t increase Killua’s physical strength, just having overwhelming speed is enough to outclass most opponents. It’s also a great ability to cover huge distances quickly.

Emperor Time

Kurapika

When Kurapika activates his scarlet eyes, he becomes a Specialist who has hundred percent control over all five categories of Nen. He calls this state Emperor Time. Kurapika in Emperor Time is the only character in Hunter X Hunter who can fully utilize all five categories of Nen.

This is one of the most overpowered abilities in Hunter X Hunter, because it essentially gives Kurapika mastery over polar opposite techniques. This also completely confuses his opponents, giving Kurapika a mental edge as well.

Skill Hunter

Chrollo Lucilfer

Chrollo is the leader of the Phantom Troupe and one of the best Nen users in Hunter X Hunter. His Skill Hunter ability allows him to steal other people’s techniques and store them in his book. After the technique has been stolen, the original user will no longer be able to use it.

With Skill Hunter at his disposal, Chrollo’s actions and abilities are impossible to predict. The only weakness of Skill Hunter is that Chrollo must meet a few conditions before he can steal a Nen ability.

100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva

Isaac Netero

Netero can summon a huge Nen structure in the shape of a Guanyin statue to attack his opponents. The speed of these attacks far surpasses the speed of sound, as Netero only needs to put his hands together and pray for the attack to happen.

This Nen technique is nearly impossible for any hunter to counter, and even Meruem couldn’t dodge Netero’s relentless attacks. As a last resort, Netero can channel all his Nen into a single beam of light from the Nen construct’s mouth, annihilating anything in his path.

Aura Synthesis

Meruem

Meruem’s Aura Synthesis allows him to take the Nen of those he consumes for himself. This makes him stronger every time he consumes a stronger warrior. Aura Synthesis also allows Meruem to replicate Nen abilities and make those abilities much stronger.

However, it’s unclear whether this applies to just his royal guards or anyone else he eats. Meruem never used any Nen abilities in battle, as he lacked the time to develop and refine them. This shows how much potential Meruem had if he took the time to train Aura Synthesis.

Wish Granting

Nanika

Nanika is a calamity from the Dark Continent who possesses the ability to grant any wish. There seems to be no limit to the wishing capacity of Nanika, as she was able to heal Gon with relative ease. Because of this limitless power, no Nen ability surpasses Nanika’s wish granting.

After fulfilling a wish, there doesn’t seem to be any bad effect on Nanika either. This likely means that she has no real weakness. However, it’s unknown whether Nanika can grant a wish out of her own free will.
