Do you have enough lockpicks?

Entire plotlines could have failed to catch your eye because you failed to pick up a book and read what lies within, or you cut a conversation short and missed what further layers the story has in store. It’s completely common for anyone to miss these plotlines during their first playthrough, so here are the plotlines that were initially easily missed in Avowed.

Keipo’s Decades-Long Lie

Keipo in Avowed.

In one of the side quests in Thirdborn, you’ll meet legendary hunter Keipo, who asks you to fetch the leviathan heart he had hidden in a secret location. After traversing the booby-trapped hell, you’ll not only find the heart but also a journal hiding a dark secret.

It’s discovered that the leviathan hunt that built Keipo’s status in Thirdborn’s society had gone awry, and he had kept it hidden for decades. He’d gone hunting for the leviathan with a fellow hunter and friend, Umpara, and a series of mistakes ended in Umpara’s death. No matter what you choose for Keipo’s side quest, you can reveal Keipo’s deception to Thirdborn’s citizens or keep it to yourself.

Running An Unauthorized Experiment

It’s easy to miss this plotline since it’s not marked on the map, and you’ll have to do a bit more exploration around Shatterscarp until you find a burnt-down settlement, Scaedclef. You will learn that an Aedyran research group was initially meant to study the spiders.

However, after the Dreamscourge began, they changed tack and decided to study the plague instead, even though they knew it was not a good idea with the Steel Garotte around. Unfortunately, the situation grew out of their control, and there was a Dreamscourge outbreak among the researchers. Now the three remaining survivors are stuck in their underground hideout, forced to choose between starvation or Lödwyn’s wrath,

A Traitor Among The Rangers

Ranger Dorso in Avowed.

The first hint that there’s a traitor among Emerald Stair’s Rangers comes to light after completing the bounty to kill the Trantons. You’ll trigger the start of the Steel Resolve side quest and start an investigation as to who the mole is, which we soon learn after reading journal pages and following the breadcrumbs that it’s Ranger Dorso.

Dorso is colluding with the Steel Garotte, and upon confronting her, you can get her to tell you where the Steel Garotte is headquartered. If you follow Dorso’s directions to the cave very close by, you’ll stumble upon Steel Garotte soldiers. Killing them won’t save Fior mes Iverno from being attacked, but Inquisitor Lödwyn won’t have enough men to completely obliterate the city, allowing its citizens to rebuild it in the ending.

5

A Possible Tragic End For The Refugees

Leoflaed and Glaedwine in Avowed.

If you helped the refugee couple, Leoflaed and Glaedwine, back in Dawnshore, you will meet them again in Thirdborn. They’ll be ecstatic to see you and even give you an excellent set of armor as thanks.

But there’s always a consequence for every decision made in the game, and you’ll instantly see it if you go with Ryngrim’s plan to stop the Dreamscourge in Shatterscarp. Should you return to Thirdborn after most of the population has been struck dead, you’ll discover that Glaedwine was one of the many who had fallen victim to Ryngrim’s spell, with Leoflaed grieving his death. Even though you helped them massively in the past, it’s a tragic twist of irony that a single decision would easily reverse that.

4

The Ekida’s Hostility

The Ekidan spirit, Kutenrus, speaks to the godlike.

As the godlike of Sapadal, you would think that the Ekida (or the Godless) would be happy to see you. Instead, the Ekidan spirits were less than pleased and seemed more irritated that you passed all three of their trials. Sapadal has been saying that she loved the Ekida and was crushed by their deaths, but the Ekida’s reactions did not suggest that they reciprocated Sapadal’s affection.

There are also suggestions that the Ekida had to perform human sacrifices to Sapadal before their doom, and it didn’t help that another godlike of Sapadal, Nandru, pleaded with you to kill Sapadal. Although the Ekida may have been angry at Sapadal’s failure to protect them from annihilation, this plotline was great in injecting conflict in you. It made you feel like Sapadal may not be the benevolent, victimized deity she said she was, and turning what’s once a clear-cut final decision into a challenging one.

3

Driven To Desperation

Speaking to Warden Petru while he's stuck in his prison cell.

The Pargrunen of Solace Keep are going through tough times, as their people are in danger of starvation. Unable to leave, some have decided to do something about it, including Warden Petru.

His friend is concerned over his disappearance, but it’s later discovered that Petru has decided to practice animancy to grow food, inspired by the animancers of Fior mes Iverno. Instead of praising his success, Mihala had him locked up and didn’t tell anyone. The side quests in Galawain’s Tusks will help narrow down who to choose between Mihala and Kostya, and Petru’s story of trying to help his people out of a terrible situation is one of them.

2

Kostya’s Secret Operation

If you choose to roam around Galawain’s Tusks before entering Solace Keep, you might stumble into a group of monks trying desperately to save the books in the Living Archive from being burnt down. In this side quest, Elder Grigore asks you to retrieve two important books, but Novice Dolna insists you give them to her instead.

Although her request raises suspicion, you won’t find out why until you speak with Kostya. After Kostya reveals his true intentions, and you choose to humor him a bit longer, he’ll ask you to check on the Living Archive. When you tell him what’s happened, he’ll basically reveal that Dolna was actually working for him and was stealing the books under his orders, as part of his scheme to deliver his people from their oaths to become roamers again.

Making Lödwyn Lose Her Faith

Inquisitor Lodwyn loses her faith and dies.

From the beginning, it’s been hinted that a death guard lives entirely on their faith and is emotionally incapable of anything else. Giatta even says explicitly to make Lödwyn ‘lose her faith’ in one of her dialogues. Most of us would think that we are fated to have a boss fight with Lödwyn, but there’s another way to confront and end her.

If we select the correct dialogue options and have enough points in specific attributes, you can get Lödwyn to gradually realize she is losing her faith in Woedica and her mission. Due to this realization (and as a better payoff for her story arc), Lödwyn pays the price of her faithlessness by literally being burned out of existence, thus neutralizing the immediate threat with no one having to draw their swords.
