The Speartuna is one of the rarest fish to find in Monster Hunter Wilds, and a difficult catch as well. But for players hoping to craft the Frozen Speartuna I
—a Great Sword with a unique appearance—finding the Speartuna Fin is a hard requirement. Coincidentally, this item can only be obtained by successfully catching a Speartuna.
This guide covers all locations where Speartuna spawns, at what times, and how to catch it. Here’s the rundown.

Where to Find Speartuna Fin in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Speartuna Fish can most commonly be found in Area 13 and Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest in the Fallow season during the Morning hours. The exact locations where the Speartuna appears are marked on the map above. Speartuna is impossible to mistake for anything else. It looks like a miniature Swordfish, and is bigger than all other fish in the water.
You can check both the time of day and the seasons from the Forecast in the top left corner of the Map screen.
Sometimes—but not always—Speartuna fishing spots are indicated by rough waters. The location is easy to identify by the white foamy circle formed by the choppy waters (pictured above). The foamy water phenomenon is an indication that the Speartuna is there. However, it might not be immediately visible because the water isn’t crystal clear.
How to Get Tuff Joint Bait
Speartuna only reacts to the Tuff Joint Bait. Tuff Joint Bait is a quest-exclusive item obtained during the side-quest The Catch of a Lifetime, unlocked during Chapter 4. Talk to Kanya in the Scarlet Forest base camp when all previous fishing quests are complete, and you’ve progressed to Chapter 4 to receive the Tuff Joint Bait.
How to Change Season To Fallow
Players can change the seasons and time of day from the tent in base camp or in a pop-up camp. In the BBQ Menu, under ‘Grill a Meal,’ you will find the ‘Rest’ option. Select it and choose ‘Fallow’ and ‘Morning.’ Do note, however, that every Rest costs 300 Guild Points.
How to Catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Speartuna is classified as a Whopper, which means catching it is different compared to regular fish. Players will need to tire it out, let the lure line go slack, and follow its movements before reeling it in. Here is the step-by-step process for what you need to do in order to catch one.
- Cast the fishing line with the Tuff Joint Bait near the Speartuna.
-
Use the slow reel method to get a bite.
- On the Controller, you can slow reel by very slowly moving the Left-Stick in a circle.
- On PC (KB/M), you have to press W/S repeatedly (after testing, it appears that pressing W/S first to attract the Speartuna’s attention before spamming W/A/S/D is the most reliable way to get a bite).
-
Once the Speartuna bites, it will start trying to free itself by moving rapidly in the left or right direction. Follow its movements.
- On Controller, use the Left-Stick.
- On PC (KB/M), use the A/D keys.
-
Occasionally, the Speartuna will jump out of the water. When this happens, you need to follow its movements one more time:
- On Controller, use the Left-Stick and hold RT/R2.
- On PC (KB/M), use the W/A/S/D keys and hold the Middle-Mouse button.
-
Eventually, the Speartuna will stop all movements and stand still in the water. This is the most important step: reeling it in.
- On Controller, move Left-Stick up and down very quickly.
- On PC (KB/M), spam the W/S keys, just like when slow reeling.
And that’s it, the Speartuna fish will be caught and you will have gained a Speartuna Fin.
If you are unable to reel in the Speartuna after getting a bite, it will disappear until the next Fallow morning.
