Robert Pattinson has seemingly given a disappointing update about The Batman Part II.
The Reacher star visited WIRED to answer some of the most searched Google questions involving his name. One of the questions was “Is Alan Ritchson playing Batman?” The actor said the rumor was amazing because it lived on even after James Gunn shut it down. He said: “What’s amazing to me about this rumor of the Batman or the Batman desire and the zeitgeist is the fact that James Gunn has personally announced publicly on his Twitter or X or whatever ‘LOL.. he’s not playing Batman. He is not playing Batman.’ And this thing will not die.” Ritchson added that he was willing to play the character even without pay. Ritchson shared:
I get asked every day if I’m playing Batman. Yeah, would I play Batman? Yes. Would I pay handsomely to be Batman? You wouldn’t even have to pay me to be Batman. I would, yeah. I would don the suit. ‘Gotham is mine.’
After delivering the line, Ritchson jokingly said he didn’t need to practice because “it just comes out naturally.” It’s not the first time the 42-year-old actor has addressed the rumor. Last year, Kevin Smith called his character in Reacher “Batman without a cape” because Jack Reacher has no funds or gadgets. Fortress of Solitude asked Ritchson, who was tougher between Reacher and Batman, for him. The actor responded by expressing his interest in playing the DC superhero. He also reacted to Smith’s comparison and said it was a “great analogy,” but he found the superhero “cooler” than the former US Army Major MP investigator. “I would love to play Batman,” Ritchston said. “You know, [Batman without a cape] is a great analogy, actually. But I mean, Batman has got like a cave, and Reacher doesn’t even have a house. He’s got a toothbrush. So, I think Batman has got cool stuff. Dude is loaded and has caves, penthouses, and spotlights that call him. Batman’s cooler.“
Ritchson could be a perfect fit for the Dark Knight because he has the build, height and talent to pull it off. He could portray a brutal and tactical version of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego. His deep and commanding voice also gives that Batman-esque feel. Plus, he has the skills to perform all the action scenes. Although Ritchson hasn’t been offered the role, there is always the chance that he could play the superhero as Gunn and Peter Safran rebooted DC Universe and haven’t introduced a new Batman yet. Gunn confirmed that Robert Pattinson’s Batman films are outside of the new DCU continuity. So, fans are expecting that they will introduce a new Batman for the DC Universe, much like David Corenswet as the new Superman.
The next Batman movie, starring Robert Pattinson, is slated for release on October 1, 2027.
