Over on Reddit, a Pokemon GO player going by ovuvuevuevue420 shared their funny jumpscare with the community at large. They say that they opened their game up at 7 am when they experienced the “unwelcome” jumpscare. A screenshot reveals that a large Onix that was staring directly into the camera with a tight close-up, leading to the face of the Onix dominating half the screen all on its own. The Pokemon was likely XXL in size, as those Pokemon usually appear on the catch screen with a tighter close-up before the game acknowledges that they’re larger than usual via text.

Pokemon Fans Laugh at Alarming Onix Encounter

Fellow Pokemon GO players have been cracking up at the surprise encounter, with many agreeing that they’d be pretty alarmed to see this first thing on their phone. Commenters and the OP themselves have been referencing memes in response to the giant Onix’s stare, referencing the iconic Skyrim “You’re finally awake” meme, saying the Onix was trying to get in touch about the player’s extended warranty, or that it got in the player’s face to ask if they had any games on their phone. Another player responding likely would have preferred to get this jumpscare over what they got instead, as they say their child unfused their Pokemon GO Kyurem at around the same time.

With Pokemon GO approaching its ninth anniversary and Onix being a Gen 1 Pokemon, it’s amusing to see how the two in combination can still take a player by surprise. While the jumpscare moment highlighted the sheer size of the Pokemon, players have wondered in the past about the idea of a Pokemon VR game, which could really put the scale of a Pokemon into perspective. An XXL Onix, for example, can be as large as 43 feet, or roughly the height of a four-story building. Since most of the Pokemon games haven’t followed a precise scale visually, it’s easy to imagine that players experiencing Pokemon at their full size for the first time would lead to some additional hilarious jumpscares.
