In The Sims 4: Business and Hobbies there are two new skills to learn: pottery and tattooing. You’ll need to purchase some equipment for both of them, but once you’ve learned the basics, each can provide rewards for your Sims and allow you to pursue a wider range of hobbies.
We take a look at what you can craft with the pottery skill, how to maximize your talent, and what uses it has as both a hobby and a small business venture. Your crafty Sims will love to explore this new hobby.
What Is The Pottery Skill?
The pottery skill is a new ten-level skill which comes with the Businesses &Hobbies expansion. Sims can craft a wide range of pottery items, from basic round vases to sculptures and tea sets. As you level up your pottery skill, you’ll also learn extra abilities, such as Kintsugi.
You can use or sell any pottery items you make, allowing you to earn some Simoleons from your craft. The higher level you are, the more expensive and higher quality items you can create.
Sims high in skill will also be able to mentor other Sims, or teach pottery classes, for the right price, of course!
How To Increase Pottery Skill
To make pottery you will need:
Pottery Wheel By GFAUB $500 – This allows your Sim to craft basic pottery items.
Pottery Kiln By GFAUB $580 – This allows your Sim to glaze and fire their pottery.
You can buy these items from the build buy catalog or find them in a Pottery Studio. You can visit Terra-Potta in Nordhaven and this small business charges $9 an hour entry fee. For this you can use the pottery wheels and kilns.
Pottery skills can be increased in the following ways:
- Crafting Pottery – Using a pottery wheel, and at the cost of materials from $20 – $200.
- Glazing Pottery – This requires a kiln but has no charge.
- Taking A Pottery Class – The cost of this varies depending on the skill level of the lecturer but it is a fast way to build skill.
- Reading A Pottery Skill Book – Levels one to three are covered by volume one, levels four to six by volume two and levels seven to ten by volume three. You can purchase the books on a mobile, computer or via a bookshelf and cost $75, $150 and $250.
- Receiving Mentoring In Pottery – You can pay for mentoring or receive it for free at a class.
A class costs around $180 at Terra-Potta when you begin. This is variable depending on the skill level of the teachers, so expect it to increase over time.
Pottery Classes
To take a pottery class, you can click on the whiteboard in the pottery studio and select ask to start a class. In Terra-Potta you’ll need to ask Jolanda Koopman and she’ll begin to teach you.
The event has goals, like any social event. Pottery class goals are:
- Listen to Lecture for 30 minutes – Click on the class teacher and select Listen to Pottery Lecture.
- Craft a Ceramic Object – Use one of the Pottery Wheels to craft any item.
- Glaze A Ceramic Item – Click your finished item on the wheel and select glaze or click an empty Kiln and choose glaze item from inventory. You can also click an unglazed item in your inventory window and select glaze.
- Receive Mentoring For 30 Minutes – While making your pot, click on the teacher and select Ask For Mentoring.
- Discuss Pottery Techniques – You’ll need to select this from the social menu under hobbies. This has to be done twice with two different Sims.
- Make A New Friend – This is the most difficult task as the social bar must ping into friends. However, you can get to gold without needing to do this.
If the pottery wheels or kilns are full, you can select scrap ceramic on any unfinished item on a wheel, or break on any finished ceramic on a kiln or wheel and clean the pieces up. Don’t feel bad, Sims need to learn to take their creations home!
Unlocks And Perks
As your skill progresses, you’ll unlock new items to craft. Each item has a different cost for the raw materials to craft it. The higher the skill level required for a recipe, the more the items cost to craft, and the higher the sale price.
