There are some items in Wilds that you can’t actually choose when you find them, nor can you strictly influence when they appear either. The Scarred Scale is one such item. While you can partially boost your chances of finding one, the chances still mainly come down to luck. Let’s try searching anyway.
Where To Find Scarred Scales
Scarred Scales are one of a rare few materials in Monster Hunter Wilds that you can’t find yourself. Instead, you have to rely on others to find them for you. Out of your hands, there are only two ways of getting Scarred Scales, and both of them rely almost exclusively on luck.
The first method through which you can get some Scarred Scales is through trading, of which there are two traders. Sekka from Suja will sometimes have some available for trade for a Large Goldescale Vase from the Iceshard Cliffs. Gawdygog from the Wudwud Hideout, specialising in rare items will sometimes have it as well for the exorbitant cost of ten Ancient Wyvern Coins.
Traders refresh their stock every day, so you can wait it out or rest if you want to force a stock refresh, though it still has a very low chance of appearing. Gawdygog tends to offer them more consistently, though the cost may be off-putting, if outright impossible if you don’t have enough to pay him.
The second option is to use Material Retrieval. While this method is also random and takes time, it requires no payment on your end. Just waiting. When sending out Apar for Material Retrieval, they have a chance of returning with Scarred Scales. You can’t specifically ask for it, so it’s all a waiting game and a healthy dose of luck.
Make sure to activate a Gathering Boost before trading to make sure you get double the Scarred Scales from traders, and increase the chance of them being found with Material Retrieval. Suja is classed as part of the Iceshard Cliffs for this.
How To Use Scarred Scales
After you’ve gotten at least a single Scarred Scale, you unlock the Battle armour exclusively for your hunter. No Palico version this time, unfortunately. It’s a cool set, with two variants that are very visually distinct.
The Battle armour set comes with the Stamina Surge, Hunger Resistance, Sleep Resistance, Free Meal, Item Prolonger, Bind Resistance, Marathon Runner, and Constitution skills. There’s a hearty number for just a single armour set, especially since all of them are at least level two.
It requires a single Scarred Scale to make each piece, coming in for a total of five Scarred Scales to make the whole set. If you’re lucky with your trades and Gathering Boosts, you should be able to build that up in no time.
