How to Beat Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rey Dau is the first flying wyvern hunt that you get to take on fairly early in the game, and it’s not a pushover if the cutscene of it fending off the White Wraith is any proof. This is a fight that you want to prepare as well as you can for, in terms of knowing how to exploit its weaknesses and predict its mixture of ground and aerial attacks.
Recommended Gear and Weapons Against Rey Dau
First off, Rey Dau is weak against the elements Water and Ice, so crafting and equipping any weapons you can with either element is recommended. Your likely bet is a water-type weapon from Uth Duna back in the Scarlet Forest. If you’re playing solo and have the opportunity to do so, you should try and grind for one to make your damage output more efficient.
Rey Dau is also susceptible to status ailments such as poison, paralysis, and blastblight, so ranged weapons with various types of ammo can also prove useful against it. Vice versa, bring recovery items such as Nulberries to help you recover from Thunderblight.
On that note, Rey Dau’s own element is Thunder, so any gear that you can equip to lessen the blow of its elemental attacks is recommended as well. Conga armor from Congalala in the Scarlet Forest provides a bit of Thunder resistance, while Ingot armor provides the most protection up to that point in the story with 3 Thunder Resistance.
Also, if you have access to them, craft yourself a Talisman that will benefit you best in battle. You can opt for a Thunder Charm for more thunder resistance, or perhaps a Recovery Charm to bolster your recovery stats. Don’t forget to gear up your Palico companion as well with the best armor and weaponry you can. They can help you turn the tide in critical moments, so their preparation matters also.
Finally, make sure to grill yourself a good meal before setting out, as doing so can give you even more helpful buffs to your health, stamina, and other stats. Vegetables in particular can help boost elemental resistances.
Rey Dau Attacks and Weak Points
Since Rey Dau is a flying wyvern, its attacks feature a mix of ground-level and aerial attacks, so staying vigilant throughout this fight is imperative. It also harnesses powerful thunder energy in many of its attacks, which you need to try and steer clear of to avoid massive damage and Thunderblight.
Rey Dau’s main attacks include the following:
- Horn Thrust – Rey Dau will aim the horns on its head toward the target and perform a thrusting attack imbued with thunder energy
- Grounded Wing Drag – Rey Dau will press one of its wings into the ground and drag it forward in a sweeping attack
- Wing Slam – Rey Dau will raise of its wings up in the air and slam it down on the ground in a large knockback attack
- Tail Slam – Rey Dau will raise its tail completely in the air and slam it back down toward the target
- Tail Swipe – Rey Dau will swipe its tail back and forth twice at the target
- Aerial Flip Slam – Rey Dau will fly into the air and flip its entire body before slamming back down onto the ground
- Lightning Beam – Rey Dau’s most powerful elemental attack; its large horns will fold forward and shoot a large beam of lightning forward toward the target
While avoiding all of these attacks, it’s important to make note of Rey Dau’s weak points, which include its Head, Wings, and its Tail. The first two can be broken while the latter can be severed and carved for items separately.
You’ll want to focus your attacks at these points as much as possible, and also inflict Wounds where you can. These can further supplement Rey Dau’s weak points, allowing you to deal more damage. Destroying wounds not only staggers and further weakens monsters, it can also lead to more rewards at the end of the battle. It’s easiest to see what wounds you’ve inflicted by using your Focus Mode.
Finally, make use of the environment around you when you can, such as falling Boulders from overhead. These can stop Rey Dau in its tracks and prohibit it from taking flight, at least temporarily. Flash and Frostburst Pods are also surprisingly effective at stunning it.
Rey Dau Item Drops
Since Rey Dau can be encountered several times over the course of the game, players can obtain both Low-Rank and High-Rank item drops from it for various gear and weapons. You will need a sufficiently high enough Hunter Rank to unlock the more difficult variants of Rey Dau.
The drop rate of certain items can be affected by your actions in battle, such as destroying wounds and breaking/severing certain parts of the monster’s body. Otherwise, it can simply come down to chance.
