Given the fever-pitch anticipation for GTA 6, perhaps this was inevitable. Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, which adds all of the GTA+ bonuses like ray tracing options, improved loading times, and extra vehicles is now the worst-rated Rockstar game in Steam history. Maybe people wanted more from GTA 5 Enhanced. Maybe they’re just frustrated that it’s not Grand Theft Auto 6. Either way, Rockstar’s latest launch has set a sore record.
GTA 5 Enhanced marks another pseudo-relaunch of Rockstar’s world-changing, 2013 sandbox game epic. It’s Grand Theft Auto 5, but with expanded visual options, some technical overhauls, and all the extra material that was previously exclusive to console players. Arriving on Tuesday March 4, Steam user reviews for the refreshed GTA 5 took a dive pretty quickly. It still has tens of thousands of regular players, but even on that basis, it has been outstripped by the original and now-renamed Grand Theft Auto 5 Legacy version, which briefly overtook its would-be successor.
More than 12,000 players have left ratings for GTA 5 Enhanced on Steam. Of that 12,000, specifically 50.04% are positive, according to tracking by SteamDB. Excluding DLC packs for Max Payne 3, the next lowest-rated full Rockstar game is the Grand Theft Auto 3: The Definitive Edition, which has a positive score of 65%. After that, it’s the criticized PC port of the otherwise superb Manhunt at 68%.
The Definitive Edition versions of San Andreas and Vice City also have higher scores, at 73% and 76% respectively, and the complete, aggregated Definitive Edition bundle also has a score of 73%. It’s still early for Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced and some of the negative responses from players are based on technical problems – such as being unable to migrate their Legacy account over to the new version – which Rockstar may be able to fix with patches and updates.
Some of the negative sentiment may also stem from players’ frustration about the GTA 6 release date and the absence of any news about the open-world game sequel since the first trailer in December 2023. Perhaps, in time, like the Definitive Edition of the trilogy, GTA 5 Enhanced’s reputation will recover.
