Haruhi Fujioka

The Endearing Main Protagonist

Variou images of Haruhi Fujioka
  • Japanese VA: Haruna Kawaguchi.
  • English VA: Caitlin Glass.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • The beloved protagonist of Ouran High School Host Club.
  • Initially a misfit among her rich peers in Ouran Academy.
  • Quickly wins over the host club with her subtle charm.

Haruhi serves as the central protagonist of Ouran High School Host Club. Following her transfer to the prestigious Ouran Academy, Haruhi quickly stumbles into the ranks of the host club and its excentric cast. As a middle-class citizen, Haruhi is considered by her classmates a “poor commoner” as they all come from rather wealthy backgrounds and upbringings. She is the chameleon protagonist of Ouran High School Host Club, changing up her look more than anyone in the series.

Haruhi herself doesn’t seem to fit in at first, as she begins her journey as a stereotypical “nerdy” type character, being shy and not really interested in the glitz and glam of Tamaki’s host club. However, Haruhi’s quiet charm eventually enamors everyone in Ouran’s host club after finally reeling her in to join them.

8

Tamaki Suoh

  • Japanese VA: Mamoru Miyano.
  • English VA: Caitlin Glass.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • The charming president of the host club.
  • Haruhi’s main love interest.
  • An exuberant character who cares deeply about his friends.

Tamaki is the charismatic president of the Ouran host club as well as Haruhi’s main love interest. One of the main romantic pairing, later episodes see Tamaki and Haruhi locked in a tense dilema of ‘will they, won’t they’ as circumstances outside of Tamaki force him to remain silent about his affections.

Tamaki, despite his princely appearance, is rather flamboyant and silly at times. While he may seem like a goofball and a bit of a joke at first, it’s clear that behind his egotistical and outgoing attitude is a boy that truly cares about his friends and dedicates himself to all he holds dear. He is also half Japanese and half French, and while he typically goes by just “Tamaki”, his full name is Rene Tamaki Richard de Grantaine Suoh.

7

Kyoya Ootori

The Calm And Calculating Host Club Vice-President

  • Japanese VA: Masaya Matsukaze.
  • English VA: J. Michael Tatum.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • Tamaki’s best friend.
  • The vice-president and unofficial manager of the host club.
  • Plays a vital role in keeping the club alive.

Kyoya is Tamaki’s best friend and plays the role of the cool and calculated vice-president of the Ouran host club. Despite his official title being vice-president, Kyoya is notorious for being the one that is truly running the show behind the doors of the host club and its activities, earning him the ominous title of “The Shadow King”. Aside from his duties as vice-president, Kyoya is also the one that controls the club’s finances. In order to offset Tamaki’s naive or careless behavior, Kyoya must be present, making him an essential part of both the host club’s success and also Tamaki’s wellbeing.

Anime fans undoubtedly recognize these famous characters from the genre, denoted by their equally famous glasses.

Throught the series, Kyoya and Haruhi develop a strong mutual respect for each other as two of the more level-headed and intelligent members of the club. While Kyoya does express a romantic interest in Haruhi, either out of respect for his best friend Tamaki or for personal reasons, he never chooses to pursue it.

6

Takashi Morinozuka (Mori)

The Strong, Silent, And Protective Type

Split image of Kori Takashi Morinozuka walking, one with Honey on his back
  • Japanese VA: Daisuke Kirii.
  • English VA: Travis Willingham.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • The stereotypical strong silent type.
  • Plays a protector and caregiver role for his cousin, Honey.
  • A skilled fighter who wants to keep his friends safe.

Mori is a third-year student and the second oldest in the host club. He is known as the strong silent type and is almost always seen accompanying his cousin/best friend, Honey. Despite being rather stoic most of the time, he deeply cares about Honey and always does his best to fulfill his wishes. Mori is best known as the stern yet kind knight in shining armor. While he is a national kendo champion and a karate practitioner, he only hones his strength to allow him to protect those around him.

When it comes to Haruhi, Mori’s relationship with her (romantic or not) remains largely unexplored for the most part, relying heavily on the viewer’s interpretation of their scenes. By the end of the series they are certainly friends, but whether, and the extent to which, Mori has romantic feelings for her is unknown.

5

Mitsukini Haninozuka (Honey)

The Cute, Innocent, and Optimistic Type

Split images of Honey Mitsukino Haninozuka showing off their cuteness
  • Japanese VA: Ayaka Saitou.
  • English VA: Luci Christian.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • The oldest member of the host club, despite his young appearance.
  • A light-hearted contrast to his cousin’s cool and quiet attitude.
  • A lover of everything sweet and cute.

Honey may look a bit out of place at Ouran Academy but rest assured that he is old enough to attend a high school! Honey, despite his appearance, is actually the oldest member of the Ouran host club. He is often seen riding around on cousin Mori’s shoulders carrying his favorite stuffed pink rabbit, Usa-chan. Due to Honey’s AB blood type, many of the hosts see him as having a split personality; one side of Honey being bright and cheery and the other being dark and terrifying!

As one would assume, Honey is a lover of cute things as well as sweets as he’s always seen munching on cake or candy any time he’s in a scene. Included among these cute things is Haruhi, whom Honey loves also, albeit platonically. Throughout the series, these two develop a sweet sibling-esque bond, with Honey often offering his help to Haruhi.

4

Kaoru Hitachiin

The More Mature And Calmer Twin

Split images of Kaoru Hitachiin in host club outfit and casual clothes
  • Japanese VA: Yoshinori Fujita.
  • English VA: Greg Ayres.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • The more mature, though still mischievous, twin.
  • A fan of pranks, just like his brother.
  • A troublemaker when paired with his brother, but the kinder of the two when alone.

Kaoru is Hikaru’s more rational and maturer younger twin brother. Kaoru and his brother are both mischievous types, causing all sorts of trouble around the school campus. While they enjoy causing a bit of a ruckus every now and then, they rarely do so maliciously, apologizing when their pranks have gone too far. Kaoru is easily influenced by his brother, Hikaru, as he tends to be kinder and more mature when he’s socializing on his own. However, the moment he is reunited with his brother Hikaru, he reverts to his back to his troublemaker self.

Anime has portrayed various twin siblings over the years, some of which have become instantly recognizable for fans of the genre.

Initially using Haruhi as the target for many of his and his brother’s pranks, as the series progresses Kaoru develops a strong friendship and later romantic interest in Haruhi. Fearful that pursuing her might damage the relationship between him and his twin, Kaoru eventually chooses not to act on them.

3

Hikaru Hitachiin

The Leader Of The Twins

Split images of Hikaru Hitachiin in casual clothes and club attire
  • Japanese VA: Ken’ichi Suzumura.
  • English VA: Todd Haberkorn.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 1 – “Starting Today, You Are a Host!”.
  • Generally the leader of the twins.
  • The more independent and immature of the two.
  • Childish when it comes to dealing with his feelings and emotions.

Hikaru is the eldest of the Hitachiin twins and tends to be considered the leader. As both Hikaru and his brother Kaoru have feelings for Haruhi, they both regard Tamaki as their rival, causing some tension between them and their club president. Despite being slightly more immature than his younger brother, Hikaru is the more independent one of the two, though he can be a bit childish when it comes to dealing with his emotions.

Much like his brother, Hikaru initially makes Haruhi the target of his pranks. As time goes on however, Hikaru begins to fall for Haruhi’s subtle charms, particularly her appreciation of the twins as separate people, virtues, flaws, and all.

2

Umehito Nekozawa

The Scary But Well-Meaning Black Magic Club President

Split images of Umehito Nekozawa as president of the Black Magic Club and regular student
  • Japanese VA: Yuji Ueda.
  • English VA: Patrick Seitz.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 5 – “The Twins Fight!”.
  • The president of the Black Magic Club.
  • Lurks in the shadows because he has photophobia.
  • While appearing strange at first, he’s a sweet guy.

Nekozawa is the mysterious president of the Black Magic Club at Ouran High. He mostly appears with black hair, wearing a dark cloak and carrying his trusty curse doll, Beelzenef. Seemingly an attempt to come off as more scary, Nekozawa’s appearance is revealed to actually be an attempt to hide from the sunlight as he suffers from photophobia. Tamaki is a rather superstitious person and tends to be a bit nervous or on edge when Nekozawa is around.

Nekozawa and Haruhi rarely interact in the show, and there’s no evidence to show that he has a platonic, let alone romantic, interest in her. There’s certainly no bad blood between the two, but there’s also little to indicate that they are more than passing friends or even just acquaintances.

1

Ryoji Fujioka (Ranka)

The Affectionate Father Of Haruhi

Split images of Ryoji Ranka Fujioka in work outfit and casual at home clothes
  • Japanese VA: Takehito Koyasu.
  • English VA: Mike McFarland.
  • Debut Episode: Ep 10 – “A Day in the Life of the Fuijoka Family!”.
  • Haruhi’s doting father.
  • An important LGBTQ+ character.
  • A kind, cheery, and thoughtful individual.

Ryoji is Haruhi’s loving father who also goes by the name of Ranka when working his profession as a crossdresser and bartender. Ryoji was (and still is) an important character to the LBGTQ+ community as he is openly bisexual in addition to representing the crossdressing profession. Ryoji is a rather bright and cheery man, sharing many similar personality traits to Tamaki.

Ryoji, despite having to raise Haruhi on his own after the passing of his wife, is an incredibly doting and attentive father who constantly tries to spoil and pamper his humble daughter. The two share a close, loving, and warm bond, each going above and beyond to provide for the other.
